ISLAMABAD: A reference was filed on Sunday in the Election Commission of Pakistan, challenging the eligibility of Asif Ali Zardari as president of Pakistan.

Advocate Maulvi Iqbal Haidar requested the ECP to scrutinise the papers of Asif Ali Zardari as the law allows that the eligibility of Asif Ali Zardari could be challenged after the Supreme Court’s verdict against the National Reconciliation Ordinance.

Talking to media persons after filing the reference, Iqbal Haider said during the time of scrutiny of the papers of Zardari and other candidates for the slot of the president, he and others, who were contesting elections tried to raise objections to it, but since Zardari got relief under the NRO, his papers were accepted under Article 2 of the Constitution.

He said he (Zardari) contested elections and now is president of Pakistan, and after the Supreme Court verdict on NRO, he added, all actions and orders made regarding the NRO have been reversed, and now it is being taken the day on which his papers had been scrutinized.

According to him, the nomination papers of Asif Ali Zardari should be checked and scrutinised again. He said that after the SC verdict on the NRO, declaring it unconstitutional, now law allows that the legal and constitutional eligibility could be challenged.

  2. The arguments by PPP led government that selective justice is being done and they are targeted by the CJP. Indeed it holds lots of weight against the chief justice .. Pervez Musharraf who actually dismissed, incarcerated, and humiliated the chief justice and other judges is roaming free and CJP hasn’t taken any suo moto notice against him or his companions. Chief Justice has blasted the NRO away and the beneficiaries of NRO are now facing their cases except the president Asif Ali Zardari who enjoys immunity due to his office. But why not drag the man to the court, who actually signed the NRO through and why not those people who were his cronies at that time? Now all those Musharraf-kids including Chaudhrys of Gujrat, Sheikh Rashid, Mushahid Hussain and others are rejecting NRO and putting all blame over Musharraf, but everyone knows the truth.
