Larkana needs Univeristy

By: Mukhtiar Samo

Larkana is the one century old district which had population of 2.2 million before its recent bifurcation into two when district Kambar Shahdadkot was carved out from it in the second half of the year 2005. It has now population of 1.2 million people. Larkana has been the centre of education, business and the politics throughout the history. It is the home town of Two Prime Ministers, three Chief Ministers and many ministers, present education minister of Sindh included, prominent politicians, intellectuals and the professionals.

Every year hundreds of the thousand young people take admission in different educational institutions of the province and the country. Every year many candidates form Larkana appear in CSS examination and qualify to serve the nation. Given the interest of people in education many country wide private organizations have established the branches of their schools in Larkana. Larkana already has Board of Higher Secondary education, cadet college, Medical College, Agricultural College, Commerce College and
polytechnic college which cater the needs of the economically less sound students of the rural part of this province.

Larkana strategically is located at the place where if University campus established, the students from six districts of Kambar -Shahdadkot, Shikarpur, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Dadu and Larkana and the Sibi district of the Balochistan can avail the facility of higher education conveniently and on the cheaper expenses. It will also reduce the burden of already heavily populated Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur, the only university in the northern part of Sindh.

In the absence of arrangements of any post graduate classes in the districts mention above the thousands of the young people of the nation, every year are deprived of higher education of which worst affected are girls.

Majority population of the area being poor cannot afford the expenditures of education away from their home necessitating lodging and boarding hence they drop the idea of acquiring master level education.

Larkana has already an infrastructure for the University campus to be located in, in the building of a newly constructed huge building of the Govt. Girls College which covers very vast area in the central and calmer place congenial for the education. The building
has 56 capacious rooms, network of metal paths inside, large ground and boundary wall. Presently only few rooms are occupied by the students of B.Sc and the rest of the building is lying vacant purposelessly since many years. If a University campus is
established in it, it will suffice the needs of higher education of the northern part of the province and provide the chances of acquiring master level education to the girls and children of less income families whose dream of acquiring university level
education always remains unrealized.
