Sindhi Computing

by: Abdul-Majid Bhurgri

You all probably already are aware about the consensus of the experts that to take full advantage of computer technology it is imperative that people should be able to use it in their own language. I have been working with this goal in mind since last almost quarter of a century. Today we can use almost any personal computer in the world for Sindhi.

If the urdu speaking population of Sindh sincerely merged into their new homeland and showed their willingness to be proud Sindhis, respecting its culture, values, and language, we would welcome them!

by:Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia

We are all aware that the recent overtures by Sindhi PPP leaders towards Sindhiat has more to do with their fears of loosing power within the Government and the party itself than with their newly found love for Sindhis. But, that is OK! Sindhis should be gracious and come to aid of any one who proudly shows their Sindhi heritage as Zardari did by wearing Sindhi attire while inspecting Guard of Honor in Afghanistan.

I for one would even forgive atrocities committed by MQM and embrace them if they sincerely merged into their new homeland and showed their willingness to be proud Sindhis, respecting its culture, values, and language.

I AM A SINDHI — wrote Gandhiji way back in 1929

…when I first visited Sindh in 1916, it attracted me in a special way and a bond was established between the Sindhis and me that has proved capable of bearing severe strains. “I have been able to deliver to the Sindhis bitter truths without being misunderstood” — wrote Gandhiji way back in 1929.

Actually Gandhiji delivered to Sindh more sweet truths than bitter truths. And, in any case, all these truths indeed established a very warm relationship between Gandhiji and the Sindhis. He visited Sindh seven times — in 1916, 1917, 1920, 1921, 1929, 1931, and 1934. It was “a Sindhi friend” who had helped Gandhi shift from an expensive hotel to economical lodgings when he arrived in London for his law studies. In 1893, C.L. Lachiram, a Sindhi merchant, helped him organize the Natal Indian Congress. In 1899, Barrister Gandhi successfully fought for seven Sindhi traders who were being denied entry into South Africa. He supported the case of K. Hundamal, a silk merchant of Durban, in his articles in the Indian Opinion.

Work for the cause, not for any individual leader

By Gul Agha, USA

Whatever any individual does, it does not reflect the cause … could use some good leaders, but the fact remains that almost the entire Sindhi nation stands for the right of self-determination. Sometimes charges against individuals are true, sometimes they are clearly bogus. For example, sometimes I hear utter nonsense like Saiin G. M. Syed, an 80+ year old under house arrest in Sann, “provided terrorist training to MQM”. (in between writing a dozen books on the cause of Sindh and Sindhi culture?). How stupid an idea can there be! Other times, it is about people I know nothing about.

Good leadership is hard in a brutal country which kills, tortures and bribes people. Often such leadership must come from those who are abroad in safe harbors. Unfortunately, many Sindhis abroad do not represent or support the Sindhi cause.

Individuals are not important, ideas are. The good thing about democracy is that people elect a leader and then they remove the leader. Worshiping individuals and thinking of them as saviors is dangerous.

At critical times, many individuals have betrayed the cause.., due to personal ego or due to lack of vision or poor judgment.

All individuals’ actions must be evaluated critically, but honestly. But we must all continue to work for the.. cause, not for any individual leader.

Sindhi identity and survival is under threat, swamped by other culture, language and values under brutal ..occupation and colonization which has imposed by security establishment, making a foreign language as dominant, stealing 97% of Sindh’s resources.

Turkish (Sindhi) folk music

Turk people also came to Sindh and merged into Sindhi society afterwards, Turk surname in Sindh is the prominent example;) This is piece of Turkish music which you will find very similar to Sindhi folk music. I am almost sure that we inherited this music from Turks. Also if you look at the male dancers you will find that some of those style are still found in sindhie folk dance. – Munawar Ali

Sufi poet: Bhittai: the visionary

By Khurram Ali Shafique

Courtesy: dawn

Some people say that he fell in love, left home, became a phenomenon and came back to marry the woman who had been refused to him earlier. There is no way of knowing whether the career of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai of Sindh actually paralleled the Count of Monte Cristo so closely (and we need to be careful about apocryphal stories woven around the lives of great saints), but there are other testimonials to the warmth of the heart that throbbed in him.

266 Urs : Shah Latif a Source of Awakening

Shah Latif Bhitai is varstile poet, his content, language, diction, heroes, characters, every thing is rich and beautiful, such programs like celebrating Latif-Day offers a chance to establish connection between Bhitai and the people. Latif is always refreshing and inspiring, alas, lot of people have given up reading him, he is our greatest strength, a sole source of awakening, spread light into stagnant minds of our people.

He not only depicts Sindh, its culture, past but gives an inspiration for change, “Wethan ta waree wary“, several one liners of his poetry are remarkable, one hardly finds such a wide-ranging observations, wisdom and reflecting on diverse things. Bhitai, though a son of Sindh, not lived in era of globalization and communication revolution, but he truly encompass universe in his poetry.

People of Lyari Revolt against illegal operation

by: Khalid Hashmani

The people of Lyari have had enough with the false promises from PPP leaders and PPP-MQM government that has launched an operation against Lyari people. The mostly Baloch and Sindhi residents of Lyari had been ardent supporters of People’s Party and scores of them sacrificed their lives for PPP’s political victories. They are now organizing themselves away from PPP and forming an alliance with Balochistan freedom seeking parties and Sindhi nationalist parties.

According to the daily News http://www.thenews.com.pk/print1.asp?id=219223, to read Gahazi Salahuddin’s column, please click here

“…during the night between Sunday and Monday reflected a level of political awareness and communal solidarity that is remarkable.. … the citizens of Lyari staged a protest demonstration and marched, in tens of thousands, from Lyari to the Press Club”. The newspaper goes on to say that it was a “huge show” showed impressive organization and planning skills. It was a peaceful march and people mainly expressed their anger through their slogans. The newspaper called the demonstration as an” emotional vote of no confidence” against the PPP government.

Another interesting development is the signs of increasing influence of Baloch nationalists fast replacing the PPP loyalties among the people of Lyari. A video of a demonstration in Lyari by Baloch nationalists shows this changes through words and sights http://qik.com/ zayedbaloch/.

The same Daily News article also comments that “Karachi beginning to establish its linkages with the politics of Sindh and Balochistan”. There are now abundant signs that people of Sindh including Lyari are fed up with the status quo that allows MQM to operate outside of all norms, rules and regulations and the clue-less PPP leaders who are trampling their own constituents.

Years Will Come And Go, My Sindh Will Go On Forever And Forever

Poetry by Ahmed Makhdoom

Years will come and, years will go,

Decades will come and, decades will go,

Millenniums will come and, millenniums will go,

Mortals will come and, mortals will go,

My Sindhrree will go on forever and forever!

My motherland will glitter forever and forever!

Today, an old year has left us and a new year is born,

And, I pray to Great Lord, Beloved, Master of my soul;

But, wait! Me, a tiny drop; Thee, Vast Ocean Supreme!

Tiny I am, qualified I am not; Sinner I am, impure I feel;

My murshid is most qualified – my teacher, my guide;

Lord! Me, a wretched being, Bhittai is Thy friend indeed!

Proud on Sindhi Topi and Ajrak

LONDON, DECEMBER 2, 2009. World Sindhi Congress expressed its full support and intended participation in “Sindhi Topi and Ajrak Day” (Sindhi Cap and Scarf Wearing Day) being celebrated all over the world on December 6th, 2009. International cultural get-togethers are already planned in London, Manchester, Bristol and Scotland as well as in New York.

Sindh, currently within the geo-political boundaries of Pakistan and homeland to 35 million Sindhi people, has an aboundingly rich culture, heritage and language dating back thousands of years. Since its inclusion in Pakistan, six decades ago, the indigenous people of Sindh have suffered systematic and institutionalized marginalization of their language and culture.

Sindhi Culture under attack by Pakistani Media

by: Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia

For many years, Pakistan’s exploiting class including Urdu and some English media have been engaged in a malicious propaganda against Sindhi culture and language. First, they and short-sighted custodians of Sindh destroyed Sindh’s education system which was once envy of other provinces. Their particular assault was against Sindhi-medium schools that has ultimately resulted in the closure of more 7,000 Sindhi-medium schools in Sindh. This conspiracy has succeeded so much that many of Sindh’s middle class and upper middle class parents send their children to only the English and Urdu medium schools. Seeing the success of this conspiracy, the enemies of Sindhi culture and language have now extended their assault against Sindhi dress and other cultural aspects.

Troops, rioters battle in Sindh, Pakistan

Compiled From Wire Service Dispatches With Analysis From Monitor Correspondents Around The World, Edited by Linda Feldmann
Karachi, Pakistan—

Thousands of people led by a local religious leader rampaged through a big town in Pakistan’s troubled Sind Province, official sources said. It was one of the largest antigovernment displays since protests had begun here eight days earlier.

The crowd, which the local press put at more than 20,000, streamed into the town of Khairpur and set fire to city courts, a municipal office, two banks, government shops, and the local tax office, the sources said.

There were reports of running battles throughout the town, 275 miles north of the port city of Karachi. The reports said security forces used truncheons and tear gas on the mob,

– Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia

A news item under title “Only Sindhis have rights over Thar Coal” in Sindhi interestingly is published in web magazine “WICHAAR”. This magazine, although focused on the promotion of Punjabi and culture, has been remarkable in promoting Sindhi language and bringing Sindhi and Punjabi communities closer to each other. THe news item describes a recent demonstration in Hyderabad Sindh in which demonstrations strongly criticized federal government’s action to take over the management of huge coal deposits in Thar area of Sindh. The ashes of Sindhi Hindus can finally be immersed in the Ganga!

The ashes of Karachi Hindus can finally be immersed in the Ganga. But what of the mortal remains of Hindus in the rest of Pakistan?

By: Amar Guriro, Karachi, Sindh

Courtesy: Himal South Asian

More than sixty years after Partition, sealed borders and complicated visa procedures continue to separate thousands of families in India and Pakistan – even to impact the dead. Since the two countries tightened already-cumbersome visa procedures in the aftermath of the war of 1971, Pakistani Hindus have been unable to take the remains of loved ones for immersion in the Ganga at Haridwar.
