Why did Columbus and others try to sail around the world?

You probably know that people native to the Americas are called “Indians” because early explorers like Christopher Columbus thought they had come across the Indian Spice Islands. Traders were forced to sail westward after the spice route to the East by land was blocked for Europeans by Muslim uprisings.

  1. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Europeans wanted to find sea routes to the East. Columbus wanted to find a new route to the Far East, to India, China, Japan and the Spice Islands. If He could reach these lands he could find silks and spices wich were worth quite a lot of money.Columbus knew that the world was round and he thought that by sailing west, as other explorers at the time were doing, he would still reach the East and the rich Spice Islands. Also Christopher enjoyed sailing, he thought they were very exiting and maybe he wanted to become a famous sailor.
