PPP activist gunned down in Baldia Town – By Faraz Khan
KARACHI: A Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) activist was gunned down on Friday in Baldia Town. Thirty-year old Qamar Abbas alias Gogi, son of Mohammad Nazir, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen when he was returning home
after offering Friday prayers at a nearby mosque. According to eyewitnesses, armed men carrying Kalashnikov and TT pistols fired at the deceased in the Street no 2, Sector 4-I, UC-4, Nai Abadi Baldia Town. As the victim was left seriously injured, the culprits managed to flee from the scene. Area locals immediately informed the police and the victim was initially shifted to Murshid Hospital at Hub River Road where doctors pronounced him dead. He was then taken to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK). Hospital sources said that the deceased sustained at least five bullet wounds on his body and passed away while he was being shifted to the hospital in a highly critical condition. Scores of PPP workers including acting PPP Karachi President Asmatullah Satti reached the hospital and pacified the aggrieved party workers from resorting to any act of violence.
Meanwhile, tension gripped the area following the assassination of the PPP’s youth leader. Some enraged youths forced the area shops to close down and blocked the roads with fires. They also chanted slogans against the law enforcement agencies and demanded the arrest of Gogi’s killers as well as of other PPP activists killed in recent incidents of violence in the city.
Gogi was the Sindh People’s Youth (SPY) President of PS-90 in Sector 4-I and was a popular figure. It must be noted that was the second attack on Gogi’s life and proved to be fatal. According to PPP leaders, Gogi had informed the party office bearers that unknown persons were threatening him to abandon the PPP or else get ready to face the consequences.
He is the second person shot dead with in two days in Baldia town. Earlier on Thursday, PPP backed Awam Dost Panel’s General Councillor of UC-8 Keamari Town Abdul Ghafoor Soomro was buried alive in Mawach Goth graveyard after he was subjected to brutal torture by unidentified people who had abducted him while he was on his way back to his residence. According to local PPP leaders, Gogi is the eighth PPP activist who has been murdered since the PPP led coalition government came into power.
DSP Sahib Ali Shah said that police has started investigating the crime but so far no witnesses who actually saw the murder take place have come forward. He further said that tension had gripped the area following Gogi’s assassination but law enforcers have been put on high alert to avoid any untoward incident. The deceased was a bachelor and is survived by four brothers and a sister.
Decomposed body found: A decomposed body was found from a house located in Machar Colony within the limits of Docks police station. The body was shifted to CHK for an autopsy from where the doctors have reserved the postmortem report. SHO Yousuf Baloch said that the unidentified victim was a tenant in the said house where the body was found. The house is owned by Aziz who frequently visited the house to receive rent but always returned from there without getting amount as he found the door closed. He found the deceased’s body on Friday when he along with the neighbours broke the door of the house. SHO Baloch added that the deceased had died some 25 days ago while the cause of his death could not be ascertained. No case was registered till the filing of this report.
Elderly man found dead: A two-day old body of an elderly man was found from his house located at Madina Colony within the limits of Khokhrapar police station. The body was taken to JPMC for legal formalities where he was identified as Mohammad Ibrahim, 70. Police officials said that the deceased lived alone and might have died after getting electrocuted as he tried to turn on a machine’s switch.
Man dies in roof collapse: 50-year-old Mohammad Iqbal died when the roof of his house, located in Siraj Colony within the jurisdiction of Nazimabad police station, collapsed on Friday. Police officials said that the accident took place when the deceased was sleeping. His body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for an autopsy from where his family took it away after legal formalities were completed.
