INFLUX OF IDPs IN SINDH

THIS is with reference to the news report, ‘50,000 IDPs arrive in Hyderabad: survey’ (May 21), wherein it has been reported that civil society and workers of various organisations have voiced concern over the adversarial impact on Sindh on account of influx of the internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Keeping in view the ethnic diversity and the economic backwardness of the province, the apprehensions displayed in this regard are justified.

I, therefore, suggest that in order to contain the problem the government should make sure that in the first place the movement of IDPs be restricted to the areas of the NWFP from where they can also move conveniently back homes the moment things get settled down in their hometowns.

I also agree with the demand of civil society that the influx of IDPs into Sindh if not checked and tackled by the authorities could worsen the situation.

I, therefore, request the provincial government that IDPs who have arrived in the province by now should be registered immediately and kept and restricted within the government-provided camps outside the cities so that problems apprehended by civil society can be nipped in the bud.

This will also assist the government in shifting of IDPs back to their homes expediently.
