This year I was extremely fortunate to attend Comic Con, thanks to my awesome roommates. I only had one day there, but there was much to see.
Since I was only going to have one day there, I knew that I would have to make the most of it. So of course, I decided to cosplay.
I think I secretly really love cosplaying. I’m not sure what it is about it, but it really is just fun to dress up and show off your creation. It is also nice to reuse costumes that you’ve worked so hard on. In this case, I chose to reuse my Russell costume from Halloween, with some added clothing upgrades.
New shoes, shirt, and shorts, I was off!
Instead of driving to downtown, I actually arrived there via train, since I knew parking would be a nightmare. Turned out to be a great choice!
I boarded the train with just the base of my costume on. As I slowly approached downtown San Diego, I started to piece it all together. Tying my scarf, adding the badges, and tying my hair up to put my Wilderness Explorer hat on.
When I emerged out of the train and onto the trolley platform, there was a group of kids there. One of the little girls actually pointed me out and told me she liked my cosplay! Not gonna lie, being recognized and complimented right away by a kid made me feel really good about myself.
One quick trolley ride after, I finally, I arrived at the convention center. Aside from the people of course, it’s hard to tell how crazy of a convention it is from the outside. Once I stepped into the exhibit hall though…ヽ(°〇°)ノ
I had been to the San Diego convention center before for Adobe MAX, so it was not my first time there… but the exhibit hall was completely transformed!
To be honest, it was a bit overwhelming with the amount of people and the lines, and over stimulation of booths and displays. I would compare it to how overwhelming it was at Anime Expo. Since it was my first, and only day there, I decided against waiting in too many lines.
I spent most of the day inside the convention center, aside from grabbing food. I wandered the entire floor, and tried to grab as many free things as possible, as well as drop my money on merch, or in the tiny artist alley that they had.
As the day whined down, I met up with my friends to go to the Her Universe Fashion show. This event could be accessed with or without a pass, and it is really a great show if you’re into cosplaying and fashion. Of course, getting greeted at your seat with a swag bag didn’t hurt.
There were a lot of cool designs at the show, and I was truly impressed by the creativity of all the contestants. If you would like to see some of the designs that won, check out their blog post here.
After a very long day, and walking in boots that were totally killing my feet, we made our way home.
Reflecting now, here are my top 3 takeaways from this experience:
- Experiencing Comic Con exists outside the exhibit hall. I was impressed by the amount of things you could do and experience outside the convention center. Basically everything outside the convention center is open to the public, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t get a pass! Check it out if you get the chance.
- Plan your experience around waiting in lines. If you are hoping to get the entire Comic Con experience in one weekend, you’re wrong. Take a look at all of the events going on in the venue and in the surrounding area. There are a lot of cool exhibits, but realistically you won’t be able to get into all of them. Narrow down your focus, and you’ll end up with a worthwhile experience!
- If you can cosplay, do it! I think the best, and my most favorite part was probably cosplaying. I was actually surprised at the amount of people asking to take a picture of me, considering the film came out in 2009. Perhaps it is just the fact that that movie is amazzzinnggg. In general though, I really like the feeling of dressing up to represent a film that you love, being in a space where it is socially welcomed and celebrated, and then people getting excited about it.
I don’t know when I’ll be able to attend Comic Con ever again in my lifetime, but I’m just really glad that I had the chance to at all. #IfYouCanDreamItYouCanDoIt
