Kalabagh dam would have caused more flooding: Expert

KBD would have caused more flooding: expert

* Former IRSA chief says dam is not a flood-control project

* ANP says dam would have done immense harm to KP, Sindh

By Iqbal Khattak

PESHAWAR: The Kalabagh Dam – had it been built – would have caused flooding rather than averting it, a former chairman of the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) said on Wednesday, while responding to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s recent statement about the dam.

“The dam’s effect on floods would have been contrary to what the prime minister claimed,” said Fatehullah Khan Gandapur, who headed IRSA from 1993 to 1998.

The KP leadership has criticised the PM’s statement, and Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain termed the project “a dead horse”. “Kalabagh dam is not a flood-control project,” Gandapur said while talking to Daily Times on Wednesday. [August 11, 2010] “It is a run-of-the-river project and its design has to be changed if we want to make it a flood-control project,” he said.

Gandapur said the dam’s construction would have caused reverse flow in the Kabul River, submerging Nowshera district and water-logging the entire Peshawar valley. “Consultants have called the dam’s design a failure,” he said.

The Awami National Party is in no mood to compromise on its position over the dam. “Their (pro-dam elements) philosophy is to let the whole of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa drown,” senior ANP leader Senator Haji Adeel said. “Why doesn’t Islamabad look at other feasible projects instead of only eyeing the Kalabagh Dam, which aims to destroy two provinces?” he asked. “There are other projects that, if undertaken, will help you avoid flood and destruction,” he said. “Had the Kalabagh Dam been built, it would have sunk Akora Khattak and Jehangira towns in Nowshera district and its effects would also have been felt in Pabbi town,” Adeel said.

“Why don’t you build dams from where the water is coming?” he asked, adding that Basha Dam would be able to store 800,000 cusecs and Munda Dam 300,000 cusecs of water.

WHY! ONLY LAYARI IS SELECTED FOR OPERATION??

by Majid Maqsood, Karachi, Sindh

Violence started in Karachi was the result of occupying “Gutter Bageecho” which is around 30 acres land. Traditionally, people of Layari have been owning it but one ethnic party wanted to occupy it, so there was Action Committee made by people of Lyari for safeguarding the land. The first victim of target killing by ethnic party was Nisar Baloch who was the Chairmain of that Committee and then his successor Nadir Baloch was also killed.  “Aman committee” (Peace committe) was supported by several parties who advocate the case of Sindh. It’s so distressing to only believe that Nisar Baloch and Nadir Baloch were killed just by the land mafia. Home Minister Rehaman Malik has denied the ”Peoples Aman Committee” which is arrange by the local workers of PPP Lyari.

Since 2002, so many PPP workers have been killed? Abdullah Murad, Munwar Surwardhi and other workers of Pakistan People’s Party, indigenous social activists, workers of Baloch loyalist parties, JI, Awami National Party and vocal workers of Muslim League (N) are murdered in Karachi by an ethnic party. Home Minister Rehman Malik should answer to the people of Sindh and Pakistan, that how these workers were killed?

Is the glass half-full or half-empty?

by: Omar Ali

Is this a sign of increasing desperation in the premier spy agency+ Jihad crowd because they are losing control of the country?

I ask because obviously in the good old days, they did not have to ask the people to rise up and sweep away “crooked democracy” because they had already done the sweeping away. Today, President Zardari and ..his team and the Sharifs and MQM and ANP are all living IN Pakistan. They do not have control over the security establishment, but they are not totally powerless either. Is the glass half-full or half-empty?

Sindhis are standing at the verge of a deep hole

by Aijaz Sindhi

While Sindh has never been in easy situation during past 60 years, the current phase seems to be a defining moment for the Sindh, and Sindhis. She is in a terrible dilemma. In the absence of a unified national policy or strategy, the nationalist leadership is also in a quandary. They have to make the most difficult decisions of their life time. If they protest against the influx of population from Swat and Malakand, they are labeled as playing in the hands of MQM. If they stand still, and do nothing, they are causing the Sindhis to turn into a minority…

Sindhis are standing at the verge of a deep hole. We must come down from our ego driven positions, and start thinking about a long term and a short term objective strategy to get the Sindh out of the current situation.

What is our immediate objective, and how do we set our long term goals? One thing is for sure, and Sindhis must get this in their thought process, that is – Baloch Sardars have never, and do not seem to stand by Sindhis in the hour of their needs. Sindhis must address the problem of MQM, and ANP in the perspective of self interest. We must not be enslaved to our ego driven ideology. It is high time that we put the Sindh ahead of everything else.

In a world, where Jews and Palestinians have come to terms, and are willing to sit on the table, we need to and leave the options open to talk to our political adversaries as well. However, these talks must be qualified. We need to make an objective comparison between MQM and ANP in the greater interest of the Sindh, Pakistan and South Asia.
