This past weekend I have had the opportunity to edit my first multi-angle video, thanks to the Oregon Marching Band.
After our school’s mascot’s Gangnam Style video went viral last month, the band sought to have a halftime performance that Autzen would never forget. With that in mind, Sarah contacted me and Tom to discuss this video project. This was the first time that I’ve ever done something with multiple cameras, so I was thrilled to jump on board.
Tom Emerson helped tremendously by letting us borrow a bunch of his equipment. He was set up on the 50 yard line with one of his high definition cameras focusing on the color guard and The Duck. Up high outside the old pressbox was Sarah Dodson who also handled the digital recording where we got our main source of sound for this video. On the west side of the 50 we had Bret Emerson who got a lot of great shots of the brass, as well as cheerleaders. I recorded with my Canon Rebel T3 and managed to get the opening shot of the sax player on the east side of the field, and worked my way down towards the 50 to capture The Duck jumping outta the port-o-potty and a few of the band members dancing as well as the air blower man.
Halftime made me so nervous because of technical difficulties that I had the week before up on the camera deck. This time I made sure that my memory card was perfectly formatted and ready to go once halftime approached. Another problem that we almost ran into was some of the rain that began to fall during the 2nd quarter (it could have started sooner, but I was in the pressbox a majority of the time). However, I should have not have worried so much cause as we all know… IT NEVER RAINS IN AUTZEN STADIUM, and the rain actually held up for the entire halftime performance.
Halftime was the fasted I’ve ever experienced. My heart was racing, and before I knew it, it was over. After halftime I took all of the SD cards and traveled back up to the pressbox to get everything onto my new MacBook so that I could edit it at home. Even though I didn’t get to watch the rest of the game, I knew this was important.
Later that night I got to work with syncing up the 4 different video clips, as well as the sound file. Amazingly it didn’t take as long as I thought it would and so I went to bed so that I could work on it the next day when I wasn’t so tired.
Knowing that certain things have time frames for when it becomes incredibly irrelevant, I knew I wanted to finish the editing as soon as possible. So Sunday afternoon I worked non stop on editing, and I got finished right around 6pm. I then uploaded it and sent it to get approved by our director and band manager. They asked for a couple of edits, and I then re-edited it and uploaded it one more time.
That entire night I was so full of anxiety because I was excited to get it posted on the FB page to share it with the rest of the band. I literally couldn’t sleep; that’s how excited I was.
The next morning I finally got the go ahead from our director, and from there I posted it on the FB group, and it started to spread.
By the end of the day it was shared almost 200 times on FB, and then had 300 views within the first hour.
It’s now only day 3, but it already has 712,899 views!!!!!! It makes me incredibly excited!
A friend of mine shared a link with me saying that it got picked up by one of the biggest Korean media outlets on the web! It also got featured on the front page of Mashable.
I am so grateful to have been a part of this project. The Oregon Marching Band has always given me great opportunities in college, and now even as a graduate they still do!
I love the Oregon Marching Band. I love marching band. I think I’ll always be a band geek, and probably even more so, a Duck.
People are always gonna hate on the internet, you can’t avoid it, and I just shake my head at them because they seriously don’t have anything better to do. Haters gonna hate!
Back to the marching band, OMB, this season you guys sound fantastic! I know how tiring it is to be at band camp for two straight weeks, with hardly any time off and little sleep and no time to eat and to be at a football game to be performing in front of such a large crowd trying to keep the energy going. I don’t think people realize how much time/rehearsal/dedication it takes to be in the marching band. You guys deserve much more recognition and no one has the right to talk crap about you cause you do so much more than the haters on the internet do. I look forward to the rest of the season with you all!!
