Project Link: The Hylian Shield

Hello everyone who looks through this blog. So, Halloween is coming up, and I think I know what I wanna be! For those of you who aren’t into gaming culture, this is Link’s shield from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I plan to be Link, so I decided to actually get a head start on the costume and put a little effort into it.

By the way, this isn’t necessarily a “how-to”, it sort of just documents what I did, and I’ll try to direct you towards tutorials I loosely followed, and just let you know what I did in case you wanna try my route.

Anyway, here we go!

The first and most important thing to start off with in a DIY or craft project is to get the materials!

I stopped at the UofO bookstore to pick up some papers from the awesome art supply store downstairs. I ended up spending about a half hour deciding on what kinds of papers to pick, but ultimately I picked out a piece of Matte board, colored card stock and some metallic railroad board.

I ended up drawing out the shield myself. I think it’s a little lop-sided, but that’s ok!

Here you can see I cut the shield out of the matte board. I then used it as a stencil to cut out the blue and the silver. Once I got the the blue cut (with a little overlap) I glued it down and cut off the excess on the edges.

Next was the silver boarder around the shield. Once again I used the matte board that I cut out as a stencil, then while looking at an image online of the shield, I drew out the pattern. *note that I drew on the back of the papers instead of the front to avoid having unwanted sketch marks on the sides that actually showed.

Nice and cut! (still with a little overlap of the edges) Then it got glued down and trimmed again.

Now it was time to start cutting out the tri-force symbols. First, the bird-ish thing. The wings gave me the hardest time, and knowing how symmetrical they were going to have to be, I ended up cutting the first one out and then using it as a pattern to make the second.

The triangles were the easiest part. Once you make the big one, then all you do is cut out the middle one, and move it down to the bottom to use, while you just leave the rest at the top.

I ended up taking a breather to do these last do-dads at the top. I was too nervous to draw directly onto the silver this time, so I cut one out of regular card stock that I had so I could make sure I made it the right size. Once I got that done, I glued everything down and stared at it for a bit.

Last, but not least, I cut these little circles out with scissors to glue down as the bolts. I thought briefly about making it 3D, but I felt it already stood up from the paper, so it was all good.

And Ta-da! Here’s my Hylian Shield!

In total, it took about 3 hours to make. This is just a guess-timate cause I was also watching the Chargers vs Colts game at the same time, and whenever a tricky part of the shield came up, I kinda waited a bit to think about how to approach it/just put it off for a little while cause that’s just how I roll on these sort of things. Procrastination, but not really. xD

Below is a picture that I used as reference the entire time:

And as promised, here is a tutorial I sort of followed to make this. I kept his template up on my computer to see cleaner lines for the shield designs, otherwise I kinda just went on my own after a while:
