Project Link: The Costume

Due to the rising popularity of my Hylian Shield and Master Sword posts, I am finally adding the costume portion of my “Project Link“. I originally made this costume for Halloween 2013, and used it again for Kumoricon 2014.

This post is similar to the other blogs, in the sense that it is more of a documentation of what I did to create my costume, as opposed to a “how-to”.

The first part of the costume that I completed was the hat.

I started this by cutting two long triangles, and then sewed them together by hand. NOT AN EASY TASK! It took me forever to do, and in the end the hat ended up a little too small:

After I realized that it wouldn’t fit, I added the brim of the hat, and it added extra length and made the opening larger to fit around my big head.

For Link’s gloves, I found a cheap pair of brown gloves at JCPenny, and just cut off the finger tips. Easy!

The last, and main part was to sew the top. I ended up using a green v-neck shirt that I found at St. Vincent de Paul’s and a white long-sleeve dry-fit that my boyfriend left. Since it was too tight for me to put on under the shirt, I had to cut off the sleeves from the dry fit and hand sew them onto the green shirt. Again, not an easy task, but I got it done!

And that was about it of what I had to construct myself. Below you see the entire ensemble.

Things added:

  • Extra green fabric became my skirt (I originally sewed one, but it was too tight). In the end I just wrapped the cloth around my waist and pinned it on my hip.
  • 2 brown belts to wear around my waist and over my shoulder. I found both of these belts at St. Vincent’s for really cheap prices.
  • I had to wear a white undershirt under my green top, since the V went a little lower than expected.
  • I had these boots for a long time, and decided to use them for this costume! Luckily it came with belt buckles.
  • Bought some white leggings at JCPenny to wear. They worked perfectly!

Anyway, that’s it! That’s the completed costume!

If you would like more guidance on how to create the costume, here is a tutorial that I tried to roughly  follow for the majority of this costume’s completion:

Thanks for checking me out!
