Time to implement the Sindhi language bill

by Dr. Prof. Gul Agha

Sindhi is the sole official language of Sindh. It is time to implement the law — all officials in Sindh must be proficient in speaking, reading and writing Sindhi. All official versions of documents must be in Sindhi. All interviews and entrance exams, provincial Civil Service exams must be in Sindhi.

Sindhi must be a compulsory subject in grades XI and XII and in the universities. All courts must function in Sindhi. (Of course, we are for fairness. No one, Urdu, Pushtuun, Marwari, Gujarati, etc. should be deprived of justice because they cannot understand Sindhi. A translator should be provided to ensure justice for the non-Sindhi defendants or witnesses in courts. Second class status for the Sindhi language in its native land is not acceptable. Ignoring the will of the people of Sindh expressed through its laws is unacceptable colonialism).

Sindh PPP (with the unanimous support of all Sindhi members and an 80% favorable vote) passed the language resolution in the Sindh Assembly over three decades ago. It is time they stood up for the universal principle and implemented it. Sindhi language cannot be allowed to die a slow death.
