Three kidnapped journalists released after police action
Karachi: August 5, 2009, Three journalists were kidnapped by land mafia group allegedly supported by MQM in Karachi Suhrab Goth locality on Tuesday evening. Mushtaque Sarki, reporter for Sindh TV News, along with cameraman and driver was returning from coverage of a protest by residents of two villages being demolished under City Government’s order in Suhrab Goth, district Malir.
Journalists were kidnapped from Super Highway on way to their office to file the sotry, abductors tortured journalists and deprived them of recorded DVs and valuable. Police later along with villagers raided a hide out of land mafia and got release three journalists, arrested two persons, one Adil Khan is brother of MQM leader Shamim Akhtar (former federal Minister for communication) and another land grabber Iqbal Khan, 8 other armed gunmen managed to fled the police party raid. Sindhi Daily “Ibrat” and “Awami Awaz” reported.
Reporter Mushtaque Sarki and cameraman Ehsan Sanjhrani, along with their driver, were kidnapped from Super Highway and tortured at house in Allah Bux Village.
Station Police Officer (SHO) Aijaz Rajpar told to journalists that on orders of Karachi Police Chief Wasim Ahmad police has registered case of kidnapping and torture against 10 persons, two of them are arrested and locked up. Police party led by a DSP and ten police hevicles surrounded the nearby village Allah Bux where journalists were kept hostage by land mafia.
DVs of recording were forcibly taken away from tv crew by group of 10 armed persons.
Latter on talking to Sindh TV News leaders of journalists associations condemned the attack on journalists and demanded police inquiry.
Provincial Minister Agha Siraj Durrani, talking to Sindh TV News, said that government would punish the culprit and would investigate the demolition of two villages by City Government.
“Villagers of two Sindhi villages resisted the City Government’s bulldozers demolishing attempts, officials were escorted by police, 20 villagers were injured in the clash with officials and police”, “Ibrat” added.
