Allama Iqbal and his poetry

by: Omar Ali, USA

Allama Iqbal had many sides. He was a very bright student (Arnold recognized that), but he was also a from a neo-convert molvi family that still had issues with their Hindu relatives and whose social outlook was conservative and conservative in the medieval orthodox manner, with very little balance from the more rainbow colored diverse folk traditions of Punjab. This mullahism sneaked more and more into his poetry as he got older (probably because he was intoxicated by the wah wah that his jihadi and obscurantist poetry got from the himayat e islam crowd). He did have other good qualities though: he was lazy, loved wine and music, liked to chat with his friends and smoke hookah and avoid his nagging wife and loved kabootar baazi, the sort of person most men would enjoy hanging out with (.. but I just mean that in our society these are mostly male pursuits even today) … and all well documented by his son and others close to him.

The paradox of our time!

Isn’t it amazing that George Carlin – comedian of the 70’s and 80’s – could write something so very eloquent…and so very appropriate.

by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

L.K. Advani on Sindhi Culture and Sindhyat

Cultural nationalism is not anti-Muslim

Courtesy: Rediff.com, August 07, 2009

by: L. K. Advani, Leader of the Opposition, Indian Parliament

..Cultural nationalism holds that India’s national identity is defined by its unifying and integrating culture, which transcends its religious and other diversities. This is not something I learnt from books.

I was born and grew up in an environment of cultural nationalism. In the first phase of my book [‘My Country, My Life], which deals with the first 20 years of my life that I spent in Sindh, I have described how the social and cultural ethos of Sindh was informed by a remarkable harmony and peaceful coexistence between Hindus and Muslims.

This was primarily due to two factors: the Sindhi language and the propagation of religious tolerance by both Hindu spiritual leaders and Muslim Sufi saints. All the great Hindu and Muslim poets and saints communicated their inspiring ideals through Sindhi.

I have illustrated in my book the best traditions of Sindhiyat by referring to the teachings of Shah Abdul Latif ‘Bhitai’, who is universally regarded as the greatest Sindhi poet of all times. He composed poems in praise of Rama. I have also referred to Sachal Sarmast, who described himself as a ‘Jogi’ and advocated brotherhood among Hindus and Muslims under one single benevolent God.

I have described how the Sufi tradition is deeply ingrained, even today, in my wife Kamla’s family. Her mother was a devoted follower of the famous Sufi saint, Sain Qutab Shah, whose dargah in Hyderabad she regularly visited. She used to sing Sufi kalaams, gurbani and songs about Ram and Krishna with equal piety.

My wife’s sister Sarla and her husband visit Pakistan almost every year to pay obeisance at the dargah of Sain Nasir Faqir, another widely respected Sufi saint.

Kamla would never miss having darshan of Sain Noor Husain Shah, the post-Partition custodian of Sain Qutab Shah’s dargah, whenever he visited India. Indeed, when I went to Pakistan in 2005, Sain Noor Husain Shah, who was in Dubai [ Images21 ] at the time, specially flew down to Karachi to bless my family.

As even Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has acknowledged in his ‘Discovery of India’, the Indian civilisation — indeed, the very name ‘India’ — owes its origin to the great Sindhu River. Let me recall an interesting incident, which I have quoted from a book by Bhagwan S Gidwani, one of the greatest Sindhi historians. He writes:

In my student days, at Sadhbela, a famous Hindu temple, at Sukkur in Sindh, I saw Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He was at a langar, the community meal. Recently, a South Indian friend questioned me: How come, no one asked Bhutto, why he was there? For us, it was not too uncommon in Sindh to see Hindus in dargahs and Muslims at Hindu holy places.’

Talking about langars, let me mention that Kamla and I organised Akhand Paath of the Guru Granth Sahib, followed by langar, at our house in 2006. Pratibha, our daughter, sang ‘Satnam Wahe Guru’ on that day. I invited Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for the function and he was gracious enough to accept my invitation.

I am mentioning this here — and I have mentioned it in the book too — because reading of the Guru Granth Sahib and going to gurdwaras was a common practice among Hindus in Sindh.

Hence, Cultural Nationalism is about recognising, accepting and feeling proud about the shared cultural heritage of India.

I therefore take this occasion to appeal to my Muslim compatriots: Understand cultural nationalism in the right perspective. The tragic Partition of India in 1947, on the basis of the spurious ‘Two Nations’ theory, created problems in Hindu-Muslim relations in India, besides engendering problems in the relations between India and Pakistan. It is time to remove prejudices and rebuild unity based on our common cultural heritage...

Salman Khan & Katrina Kaif – Haunted by sex video

Bad days have indeed hit Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Days after rumours of their split comes some thing much uglier. The webworld is flooded with a fake sex video featuring look-alikes of Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. The video, possibly made on a cell-phone originated in Canada, but it took no time for it to spread all over the world. Report say that now an MMS clip of the video is also doing the rounds. Due to the uncanny resemblance of the people in the video to Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, the video was being pitched as an authentic one for quite a while, till some people watched it closely and figured out it was not actually the two Bollywood stars, but look-alikes. Salman and Katrina Kaif have maintained a dignified silence over the issue and have decided to let it die its own death.

L.K. Advani – A leading political personality of our times

L.K.Advani, the leader of BJP, is resigning from the leadership of the Party, and possibly from politics, altogether. I am sad that this great Sindhi will no longer be in the political arena. His immense love for Sindhis and his utmost respect for Sindhi values and Sindhi ethos is great and I feel extremely sad that he will be away from the political scene in India. I take this opportunity to reproduce here under a Review by Gul Karamchandani which appeared in Sindhishaan on L.K.Advani’s recently published autobiography . The review bears testimony to Advani’s affection for Sindh & Sindhi values.

Qamar Shahbaz Dies at 70 in Karachi

“A giant,” of Sindhi language and Literate Qamar Shahbaz has passed away on Tuesday, May 05, 2009 at 7 am at his residence in Karachi, Sindh due to cardiac failure.

Qamar Shahbaz has great contribution in Drama, fiction, poetry, actor, performer, writer, and in a way journalist, a real columnist (without mixing intellectual theorizations) with sarcastic and satiric. He was an outstanding speaker, the way he rendered the words of Sindhi, Urdu and English was very impressive.

His old friend, Agha Saleem, was telling me that he recently had started collecting his works, he went to Sindhiology and Sindhi Adabi Board for the collection of his short stories in magazines and articles from Newspapers. Agha Saleem believes Qamar Shahbaz lived movement to movement in our lives.

Qamar Shahbaz had strong leadership qualities, superfluous expressions with courageous ideas and he attracted people by his writings and speeches. He was a class fellow and close friend of great Sindhi story writer, Amar Jalil, both hail from Nawab Shah.

The last time I saw him was at Arts Council Karachi’s Culture Department’s program of ‘Birth day of Shaikh Ayaz’.

Reflections on life and works of M.H. Panhwar

(On his second anniversary being observed in Hyderabad)
(M.H.Panwhar 1925-2009)
Mohammad Hussain Panwhar (known as M.H. Panwhar) was born in 1925 in small village of Dadu district. He died two years ago in April 2007. By profession he was a Mechanical engineer but beside his job he had a deep interest in history of Sindh, its people, climate, archeology, agriculture, irrigation, water and anthropology. He is remembered for his outstanding and unmatching contribution in areas which were hardly explored prior to him.

Late Panhwar saheb was a very hard working men, despite retiring at age of 60, he did not stop working, he established small office in his residence in Clifton, hired staff and continued to research work. His innovative work in agriculture remains unmatched, the works that he and his wife jointly produced I doubt even a agricultural university produced.

A man who loved and lived with books, in his personal library he had 63,000 thousand books, which he during his life had donated to ‘M.H. Panhwar Trust’ that he along with his Scientist wife Farzana Panhwar established. Both donated their libraries, assets and agricultural form to the Trust. It is heartening to see his family now furthering his life’s dreams and planning to establish a ‘M.H. Panhwar Research Chair’ at University of Sindh, at Jamshoro, to be inaugurated soon.

Though government of Pakistan awarded him SITARA- E-IMTIAZ by the PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN, in 1992 for outstanding work in ENGINEERING and AGRICULTURE but we as people are indebted, the right way to pay tribute him is to further the uncompleted works that he left. To promote research in agriculture, history and archeology, I recall his address at Seminar on ‘Exploring Fort of Rani Kot’ where he complained that technological tools could be hire and used to establish the origin of this fort, which has not been done yet, thus research papers and material regarding fort of Rani Kot heavily relies on speculation. Arbab Rahim’s previous government probably did that a good work by organizing a seminar on Rani Kot at the spot, but since then what has been done in follow up, hardly anyone knows. Cultural department can take up the research and realize the dream of late M.H. Panwhar.

Late Panwhar’s autobiography, which is to be inaugurated on his second anniversary, is a beautiful addition in Sindhi literature and greatly contributes in analyzing social history of Sindh during British period from a progressive and scientific perspective. He was interested in everything which was concerned with human beings. In his writings he has rejected religious bigotry, promoted reason based understanding of complex human relationships. He writes in his autobiography that “he hated those people who treated women with meanness” he was against all forms of exploitation.

In modern history of Sindh when reawakening movement started in pre-partition period M.H. Panhwar sahb searched for historical identify of Sindh, after receiving a degree in Anthropology in 1950s he collected source material on history of Sindh, and later in 1970s published a book in two volumes. He emerged as a Sindhologist and played active role in strengthening scope and role of Institute of Sindhology, established in Jamshoro.

Panhwar saheb, no doubt, continues to be source of knowledge and inspiration to new generation, we believe establishing a Research Chair, dedicated to his work, would prove to be an unusual seat of learning and research.

Shah Abdul Latif of Sindh

Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (1689-1752) (Sindhi: شاھ عبدالطيف ڀٽائيِ) was a Sufi scholar and is considered one of the greatest poets of the Sindhi language.

Where there is no heaven and no trace of earth,
Where the moon and the sun don’t rise, nor descend,
That far the yogis have set their destination
they shall perceive the Lord in Nothingness.

It was mid night of April 3 and 4, 2009 that Aziz Jan Baloch died due to a fatal accident on Hyderabad-Karachi Super Highway. He was in his 30s. Aziz Jan was Senior News producer to an upcoming news channel “Awaz TV”.

Aziz, a very loving, caring and always in happy and pleasant mood is missed by everyone who worked with him. His close friends cherished his company, he was an easy going person.

His voice was clear and loud, the way he used to read news stories people liked it very much, he became a model news caster and popular. He also hosted some talks shows on current affairs. Aziz was very happy that he finally would be working freely in a channel which would be free from control of owners. Though funded by a businessmen but this channel is largely seen as franchise of journalists.

Aziz Jan was enjoying working in Awaz, he had both freedom to work and better remuneration package. He had reached to place which was striving for and dream for, but life did not give him chance to live a dreamed life. It’s a loss not only of his family (two wives and few children) but of Sindhi electronic media, he had emerged a well-trained and professional media guy.

Lala Qadir, district reporter of Sindh TV wrote “All is lost with his death”. It was not time for him to die, it was time to grow and make achievements in life and let society know what its youth has to offer.

Simone De Beauvoir

With the publication of her classic manifesto of the liberated woman, The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir became an intellectual force that the world  could not ignore. Her ideas, although extremely controversial, were expressed with a power and a passion that inspired a generation of women to explore their own lives and to question the values they had been taught… When Simone met the young Jean Paul Sartre, she was instantly attracted to him, having finally found a man who affair, however, was anything but traditional… Simone de Beauvoir’s work included novels, a play, and nonfiction. Her memoirs, written in four volumes, present her own view point of her struggles and achievements, but leave many questions unanswered.- Calude Francis and Fernande Gontier have authored critical works on Simone de Beauvoir. Ms. Francis teaches at the University of Southern Illinois. Both authors currently live in St. Louis, Missouri.

– “The comradeship that welded our lives together made a superfluous mockery of any other bond we might have forged for ourselves What, for instance, was the point of living under the same roof when the whole world was our common property? Why fear to set great distances between us when we could never truly be parted?” – Simone De Beauvoir
