WHAT IS PKU?

PKU is an inherited genetic condition in which the body cannot process Phenylalanine. Phenylalanine is an amino acid we get from food. PKU can cause severe Mental Retardation, Psychological & Behavioral issues, skin problems, irritability & sleep disturbances. PKU was discovered in Norway in 1934, PKU formula developed in Germany in 1951, Newborn screening begins in Ontario, Canada in 1965 (Treatment of PKU possible in early age), “Diet for life” recommended in 2000.
