Sindh – Karachi : Hundreds of locals along with political and civil society activists received the participants of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) long march at Tando Mohammed Khan town.
The PFF long march which began on March 2, 2010 from the tail end area of Kharo Chhan has already covered 200 kilometers (km) of its 350 km journey that ends at Jamshoro to celebrate the International Rivers Day on March 14, 2010.
PFF chairperson Mohammed Ali Shah addressing the crowd said that they initiated the long march because they wanted to mobilize the people.
“We want to see the restoration of river Indus and its tributaries, which is the main source of income for the majority population of the province,” he said. He added that the main sufferers of water shortage are the communities residing in tail end areas in Thatta and Badin districts.
Shah said that they were in action to convince the stakeholders depending on the water of river Indus and would not allow the authorities to block the way of the streaming river water by building mega projects, dams and canals at any cost.
He invited all the people to attend the public meeting to celebrate the International Rivers Day and show their strength that they are united against the mega projects, planned on River Indus.
Mushtaque Shorto of Awami Tahreek, Anb Gopang, Majeed Motani, Sami Memon and others also spoke on the occasion. Hundreds of women and fishermen are participating in the march.
