Flood in Sindh and Corruption

Every year there is budget of billions of rupees to clean the canals and reinforce the banks, but that never happens. We all know how much rich are the corrupt engineers of irrigation department in Sindh. Those corrupt ministers, engineers, civil-Military bureaucrats and politicians  proudly display their bungalows that value 100-200 million rupees. Have multiple cars and drivers. Have lands and fishing ponds. And because they don’t want people to see all they have, they probably own kilograms of gold, for future use. These corrupt engineers don’t even settle for Lacs, but Crores every month. The race goes on between irrigation and other specialties such as roads and buildings, who make billions of rupees showing roads, public facilities, sewer, and schools, built on paper. …

Flood IDPs Camps in Karachi

Due to violent monsoon and floods thousands of people have already migrated from Ghotki, Sukkur, Larkana, Shikarpur and Jacobabad. In a latest development 90% of Jacobabad has been evacuated. Special trains have been mobilized for the refugees, heading towards Hyderabad and Karachi. Humanitarian Community is requested to respond accordingly. There may be some other camps but so far four camps are identified in Karachi by our civil society teams, political parties and media friends.

The mass evacuation of Jacobabad due to flood waters that are approaching fast to the city, Sindh Government has decided to move the IDPs from Jacobabad to Karachi , Hyderabad and Jamshoro. The current update is that CDGK has identified following four locations in Karachi where the IDPs will be brought in 1. Gaddap, 2. Bin Qasim Town, 3. Kiamari, 4. Toll Plaza

KARACHI: Chakra Goth, Korangi: In this camp at least 40 families, migrated from Thul, Jacobabad are living in very vulnerable conditions. To babies were born during floods and they are in a very critical health conditions.

Shah Rasool Colony, near Abdullah Shah Ghazi mazar, Saddar Town: 32 families are migrated from Kachho of Larkana, most are women and minor kids.

Mehmoodabad Graveyard: 45 families from different flood hit areas of upper Sindh are there and looking for help.

Sachal Goth: hundreds of flood survivors, displaced and now living on footpaths in a very pathetic situation. …

After grand success of film “Vaeesara Ee Gum” one more Hilarious comedy Sindhi film from the same group “Trapada Teshan Te” is being released on 27.08.2010 at Inox-fame, Cinemax Mumbai, Ashok Anil Ulhasnagar and Jaswant Tulli maal Nagpur simultaneously.

This is full family drama. First time in history of sindhi films a tussle between mother in law and son in law instead of daughter in law will be shown. The film revolves round a rich lady who never liked her son in law. She is fond of money and money only which maker her away from his son and son in law. Floods and Kalabagh Dam

Sir: I can recall Prime Minister (PM) Gilani’s first speech in parliament, when he categorically rejected the construction of the Kalabagh Dam. Later, it was observed that he appeared very political about the subject. Raja Pervaiz Ashraf also refused to reject the scheme. Now PM Gilani has come up with an even more surprising stance that the destruction caused by the floods could have been averted had the dam been in place. It is baffling to see that the PM thinks that the amount of floodwater is just six million acre feet (MAF), which is the capacity of the Kalabagh Dam. The volume of floodwater runs up to 1.2 million cusecs (more than 100 MAF). What does PM Gilani propose for the rest of the 94 MAF of water? Moreover, the disaster would have aggravated if the water had flown upstream due to the dam on the Indus River. In addition, to collect water from a flood (which is a rare occurrence in Pakistan), the country’s leadership is prepared to destroy the Indus delta permanently. I humbly request the PM to avoid making such statements in public that perplex the people rather than giving them courage to face the calamity.

Floods : everybody has failed the people

Everybody has failed the flood-affected people. The government has not been able to comprehend the severity of the situation. It has neither made any preparations nor mobilized resources to face the calamity.

The opposition, the nationalist parties and the civil society activists are nowhere to be seen. Another bigger failure are the NGOs. Everybody, including this scribe, other expatriates and their organizations have utterly failed the people. It is pathetic.

– UN says it is a bigger catastrophe than the tsunami. But why it has not started a campaign 1/10th as big for flood affected people in this case?

Pakistan floods threaten key barrage in southern Sindh

Waters have exceeded the danger level at a key flood barrier in Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh.

The Sukkur Barrage flooding means Sindh faces as much devastation as that seen further north in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces, say experts.

Enraged survivors have been physically attacking government officials in flood-hit areas, amid widespread anger at the pace of the relief effort.

At least 1,600 people have died in the region’s worst deluge in 80 years.

With more than 14 million people already affected, the monsoon rains show little sign of abating.

On Monday, a new international radio initiative called “info-as-aid” made its first broadcasts in Urdu and Pashto in an effort to spread information about accessing aid and also about countering disease.

A new Sindhi political party “AWAMI JAMHOORI PARTY (AJP)” was formally launched in Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan today. Although some of its leaders had been previously associated with other political parties (mainly Awami Tehreek headed by Rasool Bux Palejo), the leaders of the new party say that AJP will be quite different from other Sindhi parties as it will attract a large following of Sindhi middle class. Whether or not the new party wins that mandate of the Sindhi middle class is yet to be seen, in my view, the notion of “more the merrier” does not apply to political parties.

Masses devastated and dying in Sindh

Big Towns of Sindh like Kashmore, Qambar- Kandhkot, Karampur, parts of Jacobabad, part of Shikarpur have been flooded and Shikarpur itself is under warning. There is huge and mass level destruction caused by the floods. The corrupt bloody parasite Sindhi officials who thrive on public blood have inflicted final blow to the already dying people of Sindh, Shame on them and Laanat on them, I am sorry but I cannot stop myself….

This flood will make thousands die and will destroy millions of poor people and of course no support from corrupt system. This will further push poor people into deep poverty and it will take many years for masses to come out of it, who are already sunk into poverty due to anti Sindhi policies and other anti Sindhi forces in the past and present. We need to have  sincere people in Sindh that should pitch against this barbaric and stone age inhuman system.

Death Anniversary of Nazir Abbasi – A Martyr who gave life for class struggle

August 9th is the Shahadat anniversary of Nazir Abbasi, who gave his life fighting for Sindhi Rights to his last breath. He died for the cause of poor and down-trodden and with the belief that his sacrifice will not be in vain and the coming generations of Sindhis will remain steadfast in the protection and advancement of their rights.

Nazir Abbasi – A legendary Hero of Sindh

During the months of July and August, many in Sindh are celebrating sacrifice of Shaheed Nazir Abbasi as he was last arrested on July 30, 1980 by spy agency, who tortured him, until he died on August 9, 1989. A synopsis on Nazir Abbasi’s life primarily based on that article, written by me, is given below.

One may disagree with some of the aspects of Nazir’s political views, but there is no doubt that he was one of the greatest sons of Sindh. He spent much of his life to seek justice for the poor people of Pakistan and died bravely fighting one of the cruelest dictators of all times.

Let us all salute to Nazir Abbasi’s bravery and pray that God will bestow many more Nazir Abbasi to Sindh, who will fight to bring justice to Sindhis and others!

Washington Sindhis Get-together with Nazir Essani and Discussion on Sindhi Challenges

On June 12, 2009, several members of Sindhi community of the Washington D.C. area had a get-together with a visiting Sindhi Social Development consultant Mr. Nazir Essani at a local restaurant. Apart from customary introductions, the group had an excellent discussion session about the current situation in Sindh and the challenges that must be met by Sindhis to survive as a nation. Those who participated in the discussion included Nazir Jawaid Bhutto, Essani, Khalid Hashmani, Ali Nawaz Memon, Sarfraz Memon, Hanif Sangi, Aijaz Sindhi, and Iqbal Tareen.

Sukkur : Mir Masoom Shah library sold to builder

Sukkur library sold to builder

The Mir Masoom Shah Library is the only facility in Sukkur where students use reference books and prepare for exams.

Unfortunately, the library has been sold to builders to construct residential and commercial flats on the site. Despite the repeated complaints and protests by library visitors outside the Sukkur Press Club, the administration is silent on the issue.

PALPA says PIA violating Air Safety Rules

KARACHI: July 29, 2010: Pakistan Air Line Pilots’ Association (PALPA) spokesman said that just before the crash, PALPA had pointed out the violation of air safety regulations by the Flight Operations Directorate of PIA as the management was compelling pilots to fly longer than internationally laid down rules thus putting passengers’ safety at peril.|

The Civil Aviation Authority must take notice of these violations before it is too late. He said that continuous violations of air safety rules will not only affect the sanctity of the aviation industry in Pakistan but will ruin the safety record of the national flag carrier as well. “The horrific plane crash signifies the importance of flight safety laws and passengers safety measures, he said.

PALPA since its inception has been stressing on international flight safety standards. “PALPA recently organised an international safety seminar providing a platform to the aviation professionals to discover new ideas for improving air safety and raised public awareness for their contribution to the cause besides identifying existing critical issues in the aviation industry which affect aviation safety,“ the spokesman added

Sindh has suffered more and more due to migration of uncontrolled, unorganized, and unplanned population influx from all over the World. It is all because of the ignorance of the leaders of the Political Parties and ruling class of the time. The result is vary harmful for the indigenous people who are mentally and financially disturbed as all doors of their prosperity, education, commerce, employment etc have been closed. Only the people in power are enjoying and living without any trouble and difficulty but others are very much perplexed and dejected for the future coming time. It is therefore advisable to control over the migration and also establish industrial units not only in the urban areas but in the rural areas throughout the Sindh. All the roads in the Sindh may be selected for industrial units at every tenth Kilometers distance and establish more towns and urban cities at the both sides of all roads throughout the Sindh province so that people should not make abode and create social and economic problems for the local people living in a city. Other suggestions will be gathered from gentry of  Sindh.

“A giant” of Sindhi language well-known writer and thinker Haleem Brohi has passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 @ 4 pm in Hyderabad, Sindh. Haleem Brohi has great contribution in Sindhi humor, Sindhi novel and in a way journalist, a real columnist of Sindhi and English language. He was a pioneer of Roman-Sindhi Script named “Haleem Brohi Jee Roman Sindhee.”

KP resolution urges Sindh govt to protect Pukhtuns

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Assembly through a unanimous resolution on Monday demanded of the central and Sindh government to take stern action against the people and those political parties who are involved in targeted killings of Pukhtuns in Karachi and provide protection to them.

The resolution was moved by senior Minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour and Opposition leader Akram Kan Durrani after Speaker Kiramatullah relaxed rules 240 under rules 124 to allow the resolution. The resolution stated that member of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Assembly strongly condemned the target killings of Pukhtuns in Karachi and demanding of the federal as well as Sindh government to take action against the political parties and the persons involved in the killing of Pukhtuns.

The resolution, which was also read out by PPP Sherpao’s Sikander, Nighat Aurakzai of PML (Q), Munawar Khan of PML (N) and Qalander Lodhi of PML (Q), stated that Sindh government must bring the culprits tobook and provides protection to Pukhtuns.

The resolution stated that members of the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Assembly are on the back of the Pukhtuns.Bashir Ahmad Bilour, debating in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Assembly said Pukhtuns in Karachi are being targeted while government is not taking enough steps to protect their lives.PML (Q) female member Nighat Aurakzai said MQM was ‘terrorist’ group and if they are not controlled similar terrorist actions in other cities of Pakistan could also be initiated.

Bashir Ahmad Bilour in his talks with media at Assembly premises also labeled MQM as a terrorist group and urged the government to take steps for protection of Pukhtuns.

A documentary on water problems of Sindh Kohistan

Sindh Kohistan region is a mostly hilly and partly plain area in the south west of Sindh province. It is consisting on Kirthar mountain, which is hilly strip at the western border of Sindh and Baluchistan, stretching from Karachi in south to District Dadu in the North.

Water is a rare commodity here. People use to fetch water either from dug wells or rainwater collection ponds. The water in dug wells is usually brackish that is why people use to prefer water in rainy ponds, which could be highly contaminated. Water borne diseases are very common here. As most parts of Pakistan women bear the burden of fetching water from dug wells, ponds and hand pumps. One can witness the poor, feeble and malnourished women waiting for hour for their turn to fetch water and carry it on their heads and walking for miles in the scorching sun. Situation worsens during summer and drought seasons, when water dries up in the village ponds, springs and wells. People are forced to drink very dirty water which is beyond ones imagination. Livestock and other animals also shares the same water from stagnant rainwater ponds. Drinking water from the pond and open dug wells causes water born diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, , typhoid, cholera, malaria and gastro-enteritis particularly among young children. Child mortality is serious issues in this area, especially during the drought season.

Tyranny is tyranny…

The assassination of Senator Habib Jalib Baloch has not only shaken Balochistan but a wave of grief and anger has gripped entire Sindh. The conscientious people everywhere are condemning this act of atrocity. We are all of the view that certain elements within the Pakistani state itself are gnawing at its vitals from inside in an attempt to make Aborigines out of whole populations of Sindh and Balochistan. They are organised, armed and well-supported within the country’s establishment and have the potential to undertake massacre and mass murder at a very large scale without any qualms or fears of retribution. They can splatter whole cities in blood in the blink of an eye. The murder of Habib Jalib Baloch is a continuity of the murderous spree that has been going on for years in Sindh.

Sindh and Balochistan, though, are very fertile in the intellect and valour that stands up to such a tyranny, sheds his/her life but leaves a legacy of courage for the offspring of his/her nation. The vicious cycle of cruelty and intimidation is not stopping but neither are our sacrifices because we understand they are a necessity of the historical process through which nations free the lands occupied by usurpers. The murderers never learn from history to ever stop murdering, nor do the fighters ever stop sacrificing their lives. Sindh and Balochistan have kept their originality and separate identity intact …
