Jihadis In Punjab – Punjab Govt Ignoring Reports

Punjab ignoring CID report on terror groups – By Nasir Jamal and Shakeel Ahmed

DAWN

LAHORE: The Shahbaz Sharif government appears to be reluctant to take action against the banned sectarian and Jihadi organisations operating in Punjab in spite of evidence that these may have been involved in many terrorist attacks in the province recently and may have strong links with the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The Sharif government’s unwillingness to deal with the growing menace of terrorism in the province, including its southern districts, is in defiance of the evaluation by its own counter-terrorism agencies. A recent secret document based on data collected in south Punjab finds that a number of banned groups are carrying out a “sustained drive” to recruit fresh cadre from among the “poverty stricken, illiterate and unemployed” youth in the region.

Sindhi Community Condemns Heinous Murder of 93 and 120 injured Ahmedis

Once again 93 innocent have fallen victims in the name of religion in Pakistan. The attack against two Ahmadiya prayer centers in Lahore shows that extremists have no hesitation in killing their own country men and women just because they practice different religion. I join rest of the Sindhi community in condemning this barbaric act. I also join in demanding that the Pakistani constitution be amended to create a separation between state and religion.

Justice Denied!

Sovereignty Belongs to God – By: Hakim Hazik

God does not normally communicate with politicians these days. There are people who claim to be directly in communication with God. They are more likely to be found in long stay psychiatry facilities. If they are unlucky, and happen to be in Pakistan, they will be charged with blasphemy and dragged through courts. Not infrequently, they will be lynched by religious fanatics.

Punjabi Taliban – Dawn Editorial

It is time the Punjab government accepted the obvious and took urgent steps to dismantle the jihadi network whose tentacles are spreading throughout the province.

Southern Punjab has long been seen by independent observers as a hub for Punjabi militants who maintain close ties with the Taliban and travel to the tribal belt for both training and combat. The traffic, in fact, is two-way with Punjabi militants providing safe haven to Taliban commanders and fighters as and when needed. Yet, despite these clear linkages, the authorities in Lahore continue to deny the existence of the Punjabi Taliban. At the same time, the provincial law minister insists he did nothing wrong when he canvassed votes for a by-election in the company of known Jhang-based militants. This lingering state of denial is strengthening the hands of terrorists and jeopardising the security of not just Punjab but the country as a whole.

Two recent developments ought to stir the Punjab government into action. It was reported in the press on Monday that the Jhang police have registered an FIR against the district head of the outlawed Jaish-i-Mohammad for playing host to Taliban commanders when they visit the area. The FIR is based on police intelligence-gathering which found that the Taliban network is gaining ground rapidly in southern Punjab through the recruitment and fund-raising efforts of local militants in Jhang and nearby districts. Also on Monday, a Punjabi Taliban commander from Dera Ghazi Khan ‘surrendered’ to the Punjab police, ostensibly because he could no longer live with the knowledge that the suicide attacks he orchestrated had killed a large number of bystanders.

What more will it take to convince the provincial government that the Punjabi Taliban are a reality that cannot be wished away? Forget media reports, which authorities across the land routinely dismiss when the news doesn’t suit their taste. Remember that the Punjab police itself believe that militants operating under the Taliban umbrella are growing in strength. The provincial authorities can no longer evade this issue and deny the obvious. If they do, many could be prompted to ask where their sympathies lie.

Pakistan : Punjab can no longer live in a state of denial

by Ayaz Amir

Courtesy: The News

If FATA represents the cutting edge of terrorism in the name of Islam, Punjab, unfortunately, is the hinterland of this phenomenon. Or, to borrow a phrase from the repertoire of military folly, Punjab is the strategic depth of bigotry and extremism masquerading in the colours of Islam.

Religious extremism took root in the soil of Pakistan thanks to the so-called Islamisation policies of Gen Ziaul Haq and his role in pushing the first Afghan ‘jihad’. The dragon’s teeth of our sorrows were scattered by Zia. We are reaping the harvest.

Pakistan: Female MP asks ‘Taliban fearing’ Shahbaz to wear dupatta

Peshawar : Pakistan Punjab’s Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s statement pleading to the Taliban to spare the Punjab province from violence has attracted massive outrage in political circles of the country.

“If Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif is so scared of the Taliban, then he should starting wearing a ‘dupatta’,” PML-Q leader Nighat Orakzai said while throwing her dupatta on the floor of the house.

It may be noted that speaking during a seminar at a mosque on Sunday (March 14, 2010), Shahbaz had pleaded to the Taliban to not to carry out attacks in Punjab.

Shahbaz requests Taliban not to attack Punjab!

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday asked the Taliban not to target the Punjab as the provincial government would not take dictation from outsiders (U.S.A). The Punjab CM was speaking at the annual seminar in the memory of Maulana Mufti Muhammad Hussain Naeemi at Jamia Naeemia. He siad that PMLN and the Talibanhave the same common agenda ( they both oppose Kerry Lugar Bill and ‘foreign dictation’). Its distressing that the chief executive of the largest province of Pakistan is waiving the white flag of surrender to the terrorist group.

The Nation

… President Awami Tehreek and human rights lawyer Ayaz Latif Palijo, expressed these views in an interview with The Nation on Saturday. People and Provinces must be careful in selecting/ electing their representatives

by Khalid Hashmani, McLean

.. behind-the-scene newspaper story about the dishonest and disloyal role played by the Balochistan representative in IRSA’s decision to open the Chashma-Jehlum link canal. The newspaper article was published in today’s edition of The News http://www.thenews.com.pk/top_story_detail.asp?Id=27246. The fact that the Ch Muhammad Amin who was nominated by Balochistan to be its member on IRSA voted against the wishes of that province shows the danger in allowing those who have dubious loyalties to be provincial representatives. The people and provincial leaders must be careful in electing or selecting heir representatives for wrong decisions could come to haunt them later.

Every invasion of historical proportion resulting in prolonged occupation of territory results in reconfiguration of the intellectual discourse and state of knowledge in society. Mahmud Ghaznavi’s several incursions triggered the process which led to the reorientation of intellectual and scholarly pursuits, and the formalisation of the Punjabi language in the Punjab.

Pakistan : NFC AWARD PUNJAB STILL USURPER

By Dr Ali AKbar Dhakan

Every Pakistani has been happy and over joyous to hear the news of providing more share of finances to Balochistan and N.W.F.P at the cost of Sindh Province as Punjab did not surrender its share and got the same ratio of funds. It may also be kept in mind that Punjab has already been taking double quantum of finances because of its major representation in the federation as it belongs mostly to Punjab in case of employment in civilian and military or defence organizations and setup. Sindh produces more and generates more income but all income earned by Sindh province goes to federation providing a small chunk of resources from its income to Sindh by federation .The following paragraphs indicate the position in revenue contribution made by all Provinces of Pakistan and revenue recieved by them.

The position is apparent from the data shown by Dawn of November,22-2000. In 1997-98 Sindh contributed Rs.170 billion and the Punjab conributed only Rs.58 billion whereas Sindh recieved only Rs.23 billion and the Punjab recieved Rs.58 billion.During 2001-02 Sindh earned Rs.226 billion but the Punjab earned Rs.80 billion whereas during this year the Sindh got only Rs.32 billion but the Punjab got Rs.77 billion. In this way in the period of 5 years from from 1997-98 to 2001-02, Sindh got only 14% of its shares whereas the Punjab got 94% from all the resources or finances .Now, one can understand how the Sindh province has been deprived of its resources and suffered from all evils of poverty, hunger, deprivation, diseases and socio-economic disorder particularly during the regimes of dictators .People of Sindh have always been neglected not from its resources but from the rights its employment, equal treatment in filling up the posts of heads organizations, banks, departments, corporations etc even in this regime of PPP as the Prime Minister belongs to the Punjab and as not been giving due weightage to the people of Sindh province as the President of Pakistan belonging to Sindh has been caught in the net of propaganda and uncertainity .

Three women forced to parade naked in Punjab

PAKISTAN: The ritual abuse and naked humiliation of three women casts

Received via email – faheem_yas@yahoo.com

The violent humiliation of three women reported from Punjab this week has thrown stark light on the complicity of the police and the courts in gender-based crimes — and on the continued degeneration of law enforcement in the region. This week three woman accused of prostitution were forced to parade naked through their neighborhood and onto a local highway; they were stripped and physically tormented under the direction of a man who leads a banned militant organisation.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

PAKISTAN: A human rights activist faces terrorism charges for publicising the murder of Christians, while the mullahs who incited the violence remain free

To: The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Islamabad

Name of the Victim: Mr. Tariq Mehmood, son of Mohammad Tufail Ansari. Resident of village Basti Danishmandan, Chak no. 264, G-B, district Toba Tek Singh,  Punjab

Names of the perpetrators: 1. DSP, Toba Tek Singh district. 2. SHO, Toba Tek police station, Punjab 3. DPO, Toba Tek district, Punjab, Pakistan

I am writing to register my deep concern regarding the arrest of Tariq Mehmood, an activist working for the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and the Labour Party of Pakistan, on charges of terrorism and disturbing the peace. The charges disproportionately refer to demonstrations he helped arrange after the burning murders of a number of Christians, and the burning of their houses by Muslim extremists. Police have not arrested those who incited the violence using the loudspeakers of mosques, which is illegal in Pakistan.

Ticking bomb of self-destruction!

by: Iqbal Tareen, Washington, DC

The issue of rising tide of Islamic extremism in Punjab requires more attention than it has received especially with respect to the role of Pakistan Muslim League (N), which claims to be a mainstream political party. More than anything else, the very existence of PML (N) will become irrelevant if it failed to differentiate itself from other religious parties in the country. Majority of the people of Pakistan do not want to see state policing Islam in their living rooms and bedrooms. Absolute majority of Pakistanis have rejected and will continue rejecting religion as a system of dictates. They cherish it as a moral support system and inspiration for social and cultural value system.

I am not being overly critical of Shariff brothers but I can’t ignore the fact that the birth of their political careers has been an absolute blessing of Zia’s era. It has been very hard for PML (N) leadership to cut their ideological umbilical cord with Zia’s extreme religious ideology. I have yet to hear from Shariff brothers denouncing their association with Zia or declaring his Taliban style rule in Pakistan as insane.

Sindh-Punjab water crisis

by: NIZAMUDDIN LAGHARI, Islamabad

Courtesy: Daily Dawn, Saturday, 04 Jul, 2009

THIS is apropos of two reports (June 22) on the water crisis, followed by an editorial. Two groups of tail-end users had agitated for water shortage in Hyderabad and at Wagah border. One group demanded of the rulers to release water. The other group, under the banner of Pakistan Muttahida Kissan Mahaz, protested against cut in river water by India. Unfortunately, Sindh demands water from Punjab and Punjab is crying against India that the neighbouring country is responsible for the damage of its agriculture system.

Water scarcity and disputes

By Zulfiqar Halepoto

Courtesy: daily dawn, Monday, 06 Jul, 2009

WITH unprecedented challenges of water scarcity facing the world, some new approaches have surfaced to tackle this problem. The terms like ‘river diplomacy’ and ‘environmental peacekeeping’ are commonly used in non-traditional human security studies as tension between riparian states mount on water sharing, environmental degradation, irrigation and drinking water shortage and decline in food security.
