POLLUTED water has been drained in the famous Manchhar Lake for so many years which has adversely impacted on its ecosystem. Effluent of industrial units of Punjab, Balochistan and upper Sindh is being discharged in the lake through main Nara Valley drain, due to which water levels of the Manchhar Lake have increased by 15 feet, posing a serious threat to more than 20 villages.
Regrettably, due to an indifferent attitude and wrong planning of the past successive governments, the Manchhar Lake is nearing destruction and the main source of livelihood of 30 thousand fishermen of the area is at stake.
It is reported that 95 per cent of the fish species which were found in the lake had become extinct.
However, the ill – fated and forsaken fishermen of the Manchhar look up to environment – friendly President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Raza Gillani to come to their rescue by saving and restoring this classic and one of the biggest fresh water lakes of Asia.
