This past Wednesday I was encouraged to go to this meet-up organized by San Diego Letters. I had never heard of them before, and I’m not very good at hand lettering but the event sounded cool, so after work I made my trek on over to Bear Roots Brewing Co.. It turned out to be greater than I expected!
Over the 3 hours that I was there, I met quite a few talented creatives, some hand letterers, and others just illustrators. Of those hand letterers, I met the 3 founders of San Diego Letters: Roxy, Phoebe and Eden. All of them were extremely friendly and I could see how much joy they found in basically living and breathing their craft. I’ve linked all of their Instagrams for you to check out yourselves. Meeting them was inspiring and I hope to make it out to their events more often (time and location permitting). You can read more about their founding on their website, and sign up for their newsletter for future events!
Another talented letterer I met was Doug (AKA Penmanships). He told us about his road trip all the way from Upstate New York, and his daytime profession as a Spanish teacher. He brought a folder full of computer paper showcasing his work. By golly, he was talented!! Just sitting and watching him quickly sketch out variations of “San Diego” was fascinating alone. Follow him on Instagram to keep up with the rest of his travels!
I also met a wonderful illustrator, Crystal. We bonded a lot over our lack of lettering skills, but realized we had a lot in common in our other creative musings. We’re looking to meet up again sometime to create together. Having creative friends is one of the best ways to keep yourself accountable to keep creating.
Overall, this event was very uplifting and refreshing. I have been getting more and more interested in doing hand lettering, but am never really sure how to get myself started. Being at this event and just watching everyone’s process was the push I think I needed. I didn’t get to meet everyone else that went, but I hope I can make it out again sometime. I suggest you should also check out their events, or just any creative meet up in your area to gain the same experience that I did.
Until next time!
