A documentary on Sindh and Sindhi Life

A Sindhi attorney in Los Angeles is currently working on a small documentary through the Sindhi Association of Southern California which is to be presented at a Sindhi Sammelan/ conference this July in Los Angeles, and potentially posted online. She is interested in using pictures of Sindhi singers, Sindhi art, and Sindhi historical monuments.

The documentary will be an interview of 5-10 elder Sindhis who left Sindh as refugees during the 1947 partition. The idea is to document their journey and recognize their ability to re build their lives and retain their culture. This movie will be made only to document their lives for younger generations to have a glimpse of how Sindhi culture survives in their lives. (this is strictly a non profit- educational and cultural video).

There are many friends who quietly continue to work without any concern for the name or fame. One of them is the former President of SANA Sani Panhwar son of the few top Sindhi educationist, intellectual, Scientist and writer Late Mohammad Hussain Panhwar who graced some SANA Conventions with his papers and presence. Sani also in his own way has been working to bring Sindhi History and Literature to Cyberspace besides working for SANA. Below are some links to his works. World Sindhi Congress condemns the killing of three Baloch political leaders

Press release by Information Secretary Ali Memon, London
April 11th , 2009
World Sindhi Congress (WSC) is deeply shocked and strongly condemns the killing of three Baloch political leaders, Ghulam Mohammad Baloch, Sher Mohammad Baloch and Lala Muneer Baloch. The three leaders were steadfastly involved in the struggle of defending the genuine democratic rights of Baloch people. WSC on behalf of Sindhi people show their solidarity with Baloch people at their national loss.

Realize now and do something, before it’s too late!

It appears that our adversaries are organized, determined and have every intension of fully controlling Balochistan and Sindh by using any means that would work. In these difficult times, Sindhis and Baluch have no choice but to unite and save our identity and our homeland. I volunteer my time and energy to participate, organize, lead, or follow an action plan to do some serious advocacy on behalf of our people. However, to make some headway we need at least a dozen persons who are ready to devote 8-10 hours per week to this cause.
In Sindh, they have divided Sindhis in several groups (Sindhi-vs-Sindhi, Sindhi-vs-Mohajir, Mohajir-vs-Pathan) . Having succeeded in weakening the present PPP government, both at the federal and provincial levels, and by dividing people of Sindh, they are now boldly moving to gain complete control of smaller provinces.
In Balochistan, they are on the killing spree to eliminate Baluch leadership. I suspect that these killing cadres have been unleashed against Baluch first. Once Baloch leaders have been killed, the same  forces will move against those Sindhi leaders who do not toe their line and give up demands for provincial autonomy and the abolition of concurrent list.
In NWFP, the provincial government has lost all control to Taliban and it is just matter of few months before Taliban will be controlling Peshawar as well.
The way I see the situation, there is a long struggle ahead for smaller provinces to achieve their political rights and protect their identity and culture. We might as well realize now and do something, anything, before it is too late!

A New Trend among Sindhi writers

Responding to a posting “A New Trend among Sindhi writers”

By Iqbal Tareen

Washington DC- April 4, 2009 – Your posting triggered an avalanche of thoughts and concerns that I would like to share with you and other readers. In my new book “Harvest will come” there is an article titled “Battle between Millat and Umma”. The moral of that article is that Pakistani state has come to the crossroad where its existence hinges upon separating religion from state and state from religion. What goes on in Waziristan, Qandhar, or Quetta has a direct bearing on fate and future of Sindhi nation no matter how hard we pretend otherwise. The last eight years of Bush-Cheney administration only added more fuel to the fire.

The extreme rightist forces are pushing the envelope to forge the ugliest regional “One Unit” Sindhis have ever seen. Unfortunately many of our writers and political activists have dire difficulty seeing “Beyond the end of nose “.

Political acumen is becoming a rarest commodity. Many of us are lost in the symptoms whereas the earth underneath us is being pulled by the Islamic extremist in more subtle ways than many political icons can notice. Same old forces that have plundered the nation for decades have their foot on Taliban peddle.

If our people have to lose individual dignity and freedoms they will be better off living under Hitler’s rule rather than under a rule of fanatic Taliban or Al-Qaeda. At some point you could reason with anyone who values life on earth but how can you negotiate with the one who feels that the life on earth is actually an outcome of punishment and curse. They are actually in a big hurry to get back to the skies.

I see a lot of “Thy shall not do what your opponent does” syndrome creeping into towering Sindhi intellectuals, writers, and political activists. Because MQM has taken a stand against Taliban, Sindhis seem to be shying away from taking a moral stand against it. Over the centuries Sindhis have rejected extreme religious dictates and have embraced Sufism as a core value. So have majority of people living in Pakistan. It is the unholy alliance of neoliberal and extreme

Islamists who are united not for the love of the people of Pakistan but for the hate of America. Hate can drive ones ego but it feeds on the soul.

We know MQM wants to take advantage of Taliban issue to position itself as the only political entity in Pakistan that has the appetite and will to confront Islamic extremism. It is a very smart and effective marketing and positioning strategy. They are also leveraging this opportunity to get rid of a huge Pushtoon population from Karachi and its surroundings, which MQM considers to be a major threat to its power and influence.

We know every Pushtoon is not a terrorist and every terrorist is not a Pushtoon. We have missed another opportunity to team up with progressive Pushtoon, Baloch, Sindhi, Punjabi, and Urdu speaking population of Karachi, Hyderabad and inner cities to drive a point that Sindhi people are true and natural allies of freedom-loving nations in the

world. On the contrary I read in papers that Mr. Arisar has issued a warning to Pushtoon population in Sindh to leave the province. If that is true, he needs to quit smoking what he is. This kind of mindset will lead to subsequent illusionary ideas demanding expulsion of Baloch population next and so on…

I am not suggesting that managing these issues is a cake walk. What I am saying is that it will require a political spine to take moral stands on critical issues of our times.

I hope Sindhis will take charge of their destiny instead of being the captives of an evil conquest.

The enemies within

by Manzoor Chandio, Karachi, Sindh
…Now come to the enemies within i.e. sardars, waderas, bhotars, gadi nashins, pir and mir. I’ve extensively written on this topic and do not want to reproduce the same here. There are some 33 articles on Sindh and Sindhis on my blog http://manzoorchandio.blogspot.com/
Most of the articles are about the incompetence of Sindh’s sardars, waderas, bhotars, gadi nashins, pir and mir.
The presence of this nakara class is an inherent problem of Sindh and almost all developed nations have gone through such processes. We Sindhis are still a part of a developing society and striving to make our society a developed one.
In the given scenario, you’ll have to be focused on efforts which contribute to the advancement of the Sindhi society. Do you think Sindhi society will make strides by supporting the PML-N chauvinists? What we saw during the recent long march that some Sindhis mistakenly supported chauvinists and obscurantists who are the great enemies of the Sindhi society…

They will never learn

Why don’t the establishment accept 1940’s Lahore resolution of Pakistan ??? which says clearly the word **SOVEREIGN STATES**!! After losing half of country (east Pakistan or Bangladesh), the establishment still dreaming? Why shall the provinces who share 70% of revenue suffer? For what? In which AYAT it is written that Islamabad/ establishment can  exploit other provinces in the name of Islam and Pakistan.

ASK BALOCHI, ASK PASHTOON, ASK SINDHIS, ASK BALTISTANIS, ASK GILGITIES AND ASK SARAIKIS, WHY ALL OF THEM SAY THAT ESTABLISHMENT IS EXPLOITING THEM.

Shaikh Ayaz revolutionized many aspects of Sindhi poetry

by Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia, USA

It is the birth right of Sindhis to demand adherence to the 1940 resolution

Today is the birthday of Shaikh Ayaz, one of the greatest Sindhi poet of 20th century. He was born in Shikarpur on March 2, 1923. Shaikh Ayaz revolutionized many aspects of Sindhi poetry and his 46 collections of poetry, short stories, essays, diaries and the translation into Urdu of Shah jo Risalo continue to inspire not only literary circles but also common men and women of Sindh.

Today is also the day when Pakistan celebrates 1940 resolution, whose fundamental tenants continue to be ignored by the Pakistani establishment. It is sad that the promise of autonomous and sovereign provinces continue to be simply a deception. An article about this failed promise circulated on some Sindhi newspapers and Internet lists caught my eye this morning. The article is written by Ms. Shazia Nizamani, who was inspired by the struggle of the local “sons of soil” in Malaysia. I am reproducing a part of that article as some of you may have not received it (with apologies to those who are already recipients).  A synopsis of the main message of Ms. Nizamani’s article is as follows:

It is the birth right of Sindhis to demand adherence to the 1940 resolution. It was only because of the promises made in that resolution that Sindhis joined Pakistan. Although Sindhis sometimes face criticism for demanding autonomy of their province on the basis of 1940 resolution, they should be clear and confident about this demand. Sindhis should get this fact accepted that they have the rights over their homeland, its resources, its political decisions, jobs, language, and cities.

Justice Chudhry v/s Justice Dogar

by Manzoor Chandio, Karachi, Sindh

Blog: http://manzoorchandio.blogspot.com/
Justice Chaudhry took his oath from military dictator Musharraf. Justice Dogar took his oath from military dictator Musharraf. What’s the difference?.. As far as Justice Chaudhry’s performance is concerned, I think Justice Dogar is second to none.
Justice Chaudhry worked his entire tenure under an unconstitutional military regime. Justice Dogar worked most of his tenure under a constitutional government.
Justice Dogar took hundreds of suo moto actions, including eight after reading Kawish. These cases related to the violation of human rights, abuses of women and children.
Late BB, the PPP and we all supported the reinstatement of judges not the removal of judges. The PML-N kept demanding the removal of judges which is against the Constitution.
There is a provision in the Constitution that judges can be appointed but judges can’t be removed.
We’ve always deliberated that all problems are created by military regimes which continue spiraling affecting democratic governments for years. The judges’ issue was created by a military government which has domino effects till today and it will continue for years. What is dangerous now that the PML-N are not ready to look forward to make a fresh start?
Yes Punjab and PML-N have right to protest. And there should not be police and army to stop them. For the last 63 years, establishment turned the green of Bengal into red, they raped thousands of women, they killed and maimed thousands of Sindhis during the MRD for demanding democracy and they killed and bombed the Baloch for demanding freedom.
Even during the lawyers’ movement, we saw bodies of Sindhis lying on Shahra Faisal. Hundreds of people were killed and hundred others were injured. But guns were silent in Punjab on the same day. Even lathis were not used. Why this difference?

..Chauvinists with the religious obscurantists is not new phenomenon for Sindhis. From the Pakistan Resolution (1940 Resolution) to the Charter of Democracy, they have routinely flouted making Pakistan a constitutional democracy.
They have always cheated the Sindh, killed Sindhi leaders and looted the resources.. in the name of Pakistan and Islam. The Pakistan Resolution envisaged “sovereign” and “autonomous” states in Pakistan. Sixty years on, we have yet to see “sovereign” and “autonomous” Sindh. How the .. PML-N chauvinists .. recently threw the Charter of Democracy into a dustbin and started blackmailing the PPP government.

Memories of my childhood in Zia’s rule

by Prof. Nadeem Jamali

My childhood in Karachi, during Gen. Zia’s rule, the government organized massive celebrations on each independence day. Citizens of Karachi in particular — mostly non-Sindhis- participated in these celebrations enthusiastically, with Pakistani flags everywhere.

In our Sindhi home, we were not done mourning Bhutto’s hanging. Seeing my father sitting in dark, with tears in his eyes was very difficulty. I had cut out black and white pictures of Bhutto from the newspapers reporting his death, and put them in frames all around the house.

P*** flags were not allowed in our house. We were Sindhis, not Pa****. In the GOR (Government Officers Residence) neighborhood on Bath Island, our apartment stuck out as a home that did not celebrate independence. To me and my brother, just over 10 years old children, this was not fun. It was isolating. It was also frightening at times. On one occasion, some kids in the neighborhood, after visiting our home for a birthday party and noticing the un-Pakistani life style, threatened to report our family to the martial law government… Our father laughed it off, but we children were nervous. But August 14th came around, more than anything else, we felt a sense of isolation, of not being part of something celebratory going on all around us, of missing out.

So, one year, we pleaded with our father to let us bring some Pa**** flag decorations to hang from our balcony. After some initial resistance, he relented, perhaps appreciating what the children were going through. It was great fun. Our balcony looked beautiful. It no longer looked like a balcony of sourpusses. We were like everyone else, one with our neighborhood, joined in a celebration.

I don’t remember the exact reasons, but when the next year’s independence day came, we children did not feel like getting any P*** flags. Perhaps we had grown up a bit and realized that there were things more important than being part of a celebration. .. the enemy’s celebration. Or perhaps the MRD movement had begun.

Holi and Rangapanchami function in Hyderabad, Sindh, attended by thousands of Sindhi Hindus

by Bhagwandas Advocate, Hyderabad, Sindh
Last night was a memorable night for me. There was a Holi and Rangapanchami function in Hyderabad, Sindh. It was
attended by thousands of Sindhi Hindus of different parts of Sindh. It was presided by Madam Sayeda Shahla Raza speaker Sindh Assembly and chief Guest was Ayaz Latif Palijo advocate and guests of honor were Dr Dolat Ram, from Manchester, Dr Versi Mal, Ramesh Kumar Gupta, Advocate General Sindh Yousif Leghari and Naz Sahto of KTN.
Believe me I can not express my feelings about one breathtaking speech. When Advocate Ayaz Latif Palijo came everything changed. He said like all Jews, Muslims and Christians there are two types of  Hindoos those who are considering them shudh and everybody else as neech and shooder,.. running after permits, contracts and licenses of liquor shops, flourmills and fertilizer agencies, least about their collective rights and future of their motherland. But there is another class of Sindhi Hindus, the true sons and daughters of this soil. The followers of the mystic and cultural values of Mohan Jo Daro, Bhnabhoor and Kot Deji, of Shah Latif and Sachal and of Kanwar Bhagat, Jeevni Bai, Bhagat Kabeer, Meera Bai, Bhagwanti Nanwani, Kamla Keswani,Kaan Motihar, and Saami, the admirers of writings and courage of A J Uttam, Popti Heeranandani, Mohan Kalapna, Haree Dilgeer, Kirat Babani, Sundir, Susheela Mahtani, Narayen Shyam, Ashok Motwani, Veena Shringi, Heero Thakar,Dayal Motwani, Laxman Koomal, Perso Gaidwani, Ghanshyam Prakash, Ramesh Kuteja and Gobind Malhi, those who fought against British imperialism in the shape of Rooplo Kolhi and Hemon Kalani. He said they are continuity of those protectors and vanguards of their soil who defended their county like Raja Daahir.

A Sindhi Shaam was held in Washington, DC

Report by Iqbal Tareen
March 18, 2009
A Sindhi Shaam was held in memory of Shaikh Ayaz and Tajal Bewas by Washington DC community on March 7, 2009.
This event was hosted by Iqbal and Nasreen Tareen at their residence in Herndon, Virginia on March 7, 2009. The special guests who lead the event were Hidayat Baloch and Jami Chandio. Hidayat Baloch made last minute changes in his international travel plans to fly to Washington,
DC from Houston, TX. It was a very informal and an open session. It took us back to the roots and reminded us of sixties when the series of Sindhi Shaam events had triggered a Sindh Rights Renaissance movement. A whole new breed of Sindhi poets, writers, thinkers, and
activists were introduced and inspired by these igniting events. As a matter of fact the Sindhi Shaam was a catalyst and fuel that energized Sindh Sovereignty movement. Kudos to SuhRin and Tariq Ashraf also for
providing the platform. Sindhi Shaam was a new phenomenon, which took a sharp departure from a traditional Sindhi literature of “Gul and Bulbul” to Mitti, Motherland, Hari, and Mazdoor.
Those who enriched this event with their presence and participation were: Nafisa Hoodbhoy, Nasreen Hashmani, Razia Memon, Ali Nawaz Memon, Dr. Badar Shaikh, Hanif Sangi, Jawaid Bhutto, Sarfraz Memon, Shafik Siddiki
Sikandar Baloch, Atif Chandio (Opened the session with a beautiful recital of poetry)and Milo Tareen.

We lost moral ground!

by Haider Bhurgri, Islamabad
.. It is a war fought on pragmatic para meters not on our ethnic emotions. It would have been a good decision had it been taken timely (soon as the PPP govt was installed), but it was held back to brew creating enemies among the friends (like Aitzaz Ahsan, Rashid Razvi etc are friends of Sindhis). I saw some of the friends expressed paranoid that Aitzaz is hatching a conspiracy against Sindhis, though he was not there.
And now what is good about decision of reinstatement of CJ! It is not taken on principle, it has been forced by Army, America and mob. We lost moral grounds, allowed Nawaz Sharif Saheb who became hero at our cost…

Let us welcome restoration of CJ and hope he will help in restoration of provincial rights

by Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia, USA
It is indeed a good decision by the PPP leadership to show flexibility and restore illegally fired justices including Chief Justice Iftikhar Choudhry. At the same time, after hearing that anti-Sindh and anti-Sindhi slogans were raised in Punjab, I am fearful that the federal judiciary may derail the train moving towards provincial autonomy. Unless the restored justices are pure hearted souls, their future rulings may favor rulings that favor federal jurisdictions over provincial matters and concurrent lists. I hope my fears are unfounded. Otherwise, Sindhis may see some real tough times.
