Opinion- Sindhis should support restoration of judiciary including deposed chief justice of SCoP, justice Iftikhar

by Mohammad Khan Sial

I suggest that people of Sindh (Sindhis) must support Long March meant to restore judiciary including chief justice of supreme court of Pakistan (SCoP) Justice Chaudhry Iftikhar. Justice Chaudhry Iftikhar had took more than 5,500 suo moto actions including of missing Dr Safdar Sarki. I remember when I was in El-Campo, TX, I created a special website for Dr Safdar Sarki. On behalf of his family members, I made correspondence to Ms Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, Chairperson, PPP and other political parties. Only BB replied and strongly supported the release of Dr Sarki despite she was heading separate political party She strongly raised the issue of Dr sarki about 8/10 times at different occasions and assured all support to the family members of Dr Sarki.

Opinion- Sherry joins forces of destablization to help undo what Sindhis won in Elections

by Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia, USA
She is one of those politicians who has always used her Sindhi heritage to gain prominence in politics but never said a single word in protection and preservation of Sindhi rights either inside PPP forums or on external forums. A good next step for her would be to join PML-N, which really is her natural constituency.

Let us not exaggerate or say “out of context” or attribute incorrect statements and motivations to others. Let us keep discussion focused on facts and question people’s personal motivations, etc. I do not think any one has praised Mr. Zardari or is saying that the present PPP regime has met all people’s expectations or promises they made. As a matter of fact, imposing Governor’s rule in Punjab has been criticized by almost all of us. However, when we see that PML-N and their supporters are bent upon removing the government that was duly elected by people through street violence and anarchy, one must ask whether the government that will assume the power if the PML-N and its supporters succeed would be better for Sindhis than the present government?
If we observe the governments that have ruled Pakistan in the last few decades, I do not believe that any Sindhi will deny the fact that Sindhis received better treatment during the rule of Z. A, Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto regimes than any other regime. As a matter of fact, the regime of Nawaz Sharif has the worst record than even some of the military regimes including physical attacks against Sindhi Chief Justice and eventually engineering ouster of Justice Sajjad Shah.
The path of prudence tells us that even though the current treatment of Sindhis is not good, we will fair much worse if Mr. Nawaz Sharif and his supporters take over the power. At least, now there is no direct threat to our language and culture. With Nawaz brothers at the helm, I believe we not be able to even maintain status quo.

Deja vu for Sindh Govt., Sindhi Hindus

In 1948, the Sindh govt. resisted sponsored rioting against Sindhi Hindus and was dismissed by central establishment of the country.
Today, a new Sindhi representative govt. is again noting the ugly reality and standing up for the rights of all Sindhis.

Historical Look at Hingol : Hinglaj Devi was last mother queen of Matriarchal era of Indus Valley

Another name of Hinglaj Devi is Goddess Naina which is very akin to Goddess Nania of Sumerian Civilization

by Jagdeesh Ahuja, Hyderabad, Sindh.

Originally Hinglaj has nothing to do with religion or nationalism. Hinglaj is the historical monument of Sindhu Civilization. Hingol was one of the great many kingdoms of Sapta Sindhva (Sindhu des of seven rivers) and Hinglaj Devi was last mother queen of matriarchal era of Indus Valley. Another name of Hinglaj Devi is Goddess Naina which is very akin to Goddess Nania of Sumerian Civilization. The great poet of Indus Valley, Shah Latif called her “Nani Ama(n)” and after then Hinglaj Temple became famous as Temple of Nani Ama(n) especially in the Muslim populace. And Hinglaj Yatra has now got a great new altitude beyond religious divide.

We are unfortunate people who disown our own history. Ironically people of India own our monuments of ancient civilization as their sacred religious shrines and we are ever ready to give up our past and destroy our future. What a great alienation and ignorance of our own history! How can one weigh the advantages of destruction of Harappa, Taxila or Mohen-jo-daro!? Hinglaj is even more ancient than these historical sites. Mehargarh and Hinglaj are the monuments of advent of civilization. Legend of Shiva Parpati explains the transition of matriarchal era to patriarchal era. Shiva is the first male god of Sindhu Civilization whose whole Shakti (Power) was enshrined in his spouse Parpati (Hinglaj Devi) that is why she is also called Shakti Devi. It is well known fact that Shiva was the Lord of Indigenous Dravidian people of Indus Valley. When they were forced to migrate to Ganges Valley by Central Asian Aryan invaders, they continued to worship their Lord Shiva there. Long after the Aryans settled in Sapta Sindhva and owned Shiva along with their Lord Indra (God of Storm), people of Ganges valley started to visit the land of their ancestors. Hence the tradition of Hinglaj Yatra took place.

We must not forget the fact that the word Hindu itself is nothing but Sindhu. The Persians pronounced Sindhu as Hindu. And later Greek invaders pronounced Hindu as Indu, thence words Indus and India came into existence. Due to our ignorance we have lost sense of our history. Religious and nationalistic narrow mindedness has blurred our vision. Hinglaj doesn’t belong to any single religion or nation only, it is a great asset of Indus Valley and heritage of whole humanity, which should be put in the World Heritage list of UNESCO.

The Silk route & the ancient Indus Valley

By Aftab Kazi, PhD

Silk was among the items exported from the ancient Indus Valley emporiums to Mesopotamian city-states approximately 4000 years ago through both land and sea-borne silk-routes. Historically China has maintained cross-continental trade through the port cities of the Indus Basin River state, i.e. Sindh, Ind, Hind, Al-Hind respectively, the land areas that are now called Pakistan. Most recent early medieval example is that of the Kushan Empire (included land areas comprising modern Central Asia, Pakistan with a thin inland incursion into Bharat up to Mathura) which also had an excellent relationship with China. Both empires traded silk, spices, malmal (cotton cloth made in Sindh), indigo, etc all the way to Roman Empire through the Indus port city of Barbarikon (ruins of Barbarikon are likely to be that of Bhambhore located approximately 50 klometers from modern Karachi. This was the sea-borne silk-route link. Suez Canal did not exist then.

Ships sailed from Barbarikon via the coast of modern Oman and Arabia, entered Red Sea, from where they used the delta canals of River Niles to enter Mediterranean, hence traveled to Greece and Rome. There were two routes to sail. One for winter and the other for summer. I have cited this sea-borne Silk-route in my chapter on Pakistan in SF Starr (ed.) New Silk Roads:…, (Washington, DC: Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, Johns Hopkins University, 2007). Earliest records of ancient Silk-routes are available in the travel accounts of Sindhbad, an inhabitant of Sindh (modern Pakistan) under the title of “Sindhbad’s travels”, also spelled as “Sindbad”. Although somewhat fictionalized, this book is the most earliest treatise available on ancient Silk Roads. This book was translated from ancient Sindhi to Persian in medieval times and has been further translated into several modern languages including the English language…

February 21- The International Mother Language Day Mother Language Day

by Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia, USA
Today, the world is observing International Mother Language Day. The tradition for recognition of the importance of mother languages is founded in the struggle of Bangladeshis, who fought for the right to be taught and use their mother language in their home land. They not only won that right but are now have full say in shaping their destiny. However, the struggle of Sindhi people for the full restoration of their mother language in their own homeland still continues. In spite of laws duly passed by the Sindh legislature, a large section of people, particularly those who migrated to Sindh in the last few decades and living in Karachi and Hyderabad are denied the right to learn the language of their new home land.
On this International Mother Day proclaimed by UNESCO, I urge the Government of Sindh to take immediate steps to ensure that Sindhi language is taught in every school of Sindh and vigorously promoted as the official language of the province.

Sindh’s senators nominated- PPP leadership is deceiving the trust of Sindhis

By Khalid Hashmani

PPP leadership is deceiving the trust of Sindhis by nominating such a large number of non-Sindhis as Senators to represent Sindh. In these critical times when the question of provincial autonomy and decentralization is being vigorously debated in Pakistan and globally, some very crucial votes are likely to take place in various legislative forums of Pakistan. It is imperative that the Sindhi voters are represented by Sindhis to ensure that they will be accountable in Sindh’s history if they hurt the movement towards provincial autonomy and protection of Sindh identity and Sindhi interests. Non-Sindhi senators are not motivated and inspired by the same interests as Sindhi representatives in such matters. Some of these non-Sindhi senators would not even feel guilty by voting for bills that harm Sindhi language, culture, heritage, and identity. At minimum, every Sindhi (even a Sindhi Senator who is motivated more by loyalty to a person than to his/her own people) knows that to vote for constitutional amendments that are against Sindhi interests would be harmful to his/her own personal interests. Many of our fathers and forefathers regretted and continue to regret for their vote to join Pakistan without securing any guarantees for the protection of Sindhi interests and for voting in favor for 1973 constitution that enabled the central government to usurp many of the provincial rights.

Let us hope that this news item is simply a speculation rather than a fact. I do not believe that PPP would be so unwise to make this crucial mistake at this critical juncture and trade away their “own” interests.

An Arab & a Sindhi

One day an Arab came to Radio club and sat in a corner with a worried face.
One Sindhi saw him and asked ,’Why all this sorrow?’
The Arab replied,’ I am suffering from a rare disease and I need a particular type of blood which is available only in India.’
And he named the rare blood group.
The Sindhi jumped up and said, ‘ God be praised. What luck.! That is my blood group . I will gladly give my blood to you.’
The Arab was so pleased that on the next day , he presented a Mercedes car and Rs. 5OO, OOO to our Sindhi .
Afterwards they went together to the hospital
.
The Doctors complimented the two on successful transfusion of blood.
After one year, the same Arab returned to India and contacted our Sindhi friend .
But this time the Arab gave nothing to the Sindhi.
The Sindhi was perplexed and said to the Arab,’ Why brother! You are angry with me!.You are offering me absolutely nothing this time.
The Arab smiled and said ‘No brother. I cannot be angry with you. But please remember. I have now your blood in my veins.’
Now the same joke in Colloquial  phonetic Roman Sindhi script.

Upper Sindh- The No Go Area of Sindh

by Naseer Memon
The writer can be reached at nmemon2004@yahoo.com
We all feel the pain of what you have mentioned. Almost whole of the province but mainly the Upper Sindh districts are facing unprecedented rise of kidnapping and tribal clashes. I have noticed a sudden surge in kidnappings during recent months and surprisingly our CM says that the law and order situation is satisfactory. One wonders that more than a dozen people are under dacoits custody on any given day and tribal clashes coupled with police excesses are order of the day, what gives satisfaction to our rulers. We are now convinced that hidden hands in conivance with the tribal lords are responsbile for the state of law and order in the area.
