Afzal Bangash: the Marxist maverick

By Dr Mohammad Taqi
“I count myself in nothing else so happy, As in a soul remembering my good friends” — Shakespeare in Richard II

Reminiscing about some of the stars of the secular galaxy of Pakistan and especially Pakhtunkhwa is needed not just due to a family association or personal, feel-good nostalgia. It is a must because the current generations – being fed a steady diet of Wahabiism – ought to get acquainted with the history of this land.
Where first the state-controlled, and now the state-indoctrinated media persons have systematically relegated both our saints and secularists to oblivion while projecting larger-than-life images of the obscurantist characters from Pakistan Studies and Islamic Studies textbooks, such recollections become an obligation. One such distinguished progressive was the leader of the Mazdoor Kissan Party (MKP), Muhammad Afzal Bangash who died on this day (October 28) in 1986. ….

Laloo Prasad Yadav Speaks in ENGLISH

Ultimately hilarious video. Laloo tries to translate his Hindi words in English. If any person can’t speak English doesn’t mean he is nothing. He’s taken the Indian railways (the most intricate railway network in the world) and turned it into a profit making machine for India. He may not be able to speak English… who cares. He’s been the most successful railway minister in the history of India. He is such a genuine person and most of the people love him a lot.

Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim, we are proud of you

by Suraiya Makhdoom

I had the honour to watch honourable Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim’s detailed interview on ARY news. As usual he was great and spoke as a true son of the soil, Sindh.

To a question about Sindh situation, our Fakhru Saeen said those who live in Sindh should consider themselves as Sindhis. We should realise that Sindh gave us shelter and gave us opportunities to prosper. Sindh has given us everything. He also spoke passionately about the flood related issues.

Saeen Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim has said it all and he has also proven with his deeds what he says. Currently he is busy in providing relief to the flood affected people. He has responded to people’s problems and he is working to address the same. He has provided relief in many flood affected areas, such as Khairpur, Sukkur, Shikarpur and Kashmore.

Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim has a distinguished career and is well known for his principled stance. He has been a Supreme Court Judge, Attorney General for Pakistan, Governor of Sindh and Federal Law Minister. In 1981, while serving as an adhoc Judge of the Supreme Court, he and Justice Dorab Patel (another great son of the soil), refused to take a fresh oath under the PCO, promulgated by General Zia-ul-Haq.

In his latest interview, Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim while analysing the constitutional and other problems of Pakistan, has once again pleaded the case of Sindh as well and expressed his concern for the flood affected people.

Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, Sindh is proud of you . We salute you for your courage, principles and compassion. May God give you long life and excellent health.

Nazir Abbasi – A legendary Hero of Sindh

by: Khalid Hashmani

During the months of July and August, many in Sindh are celebrating sacrifice of Shaheed Nazir Abbasi as he was last arrested on July 30, 1980 by spy agency, who tortured him, until he died on August 9, 1989. An excellent write-up on him in Sindhi by Hasan Mujtab is accessible at the following link:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/13595152/shahid-nazir-abbasi

A synopsis on Nazir Abbasi’s life primarily based on that article, written by me, is given below.

One may disagree with some of the aspects of Nazir’s political views, but there is no doubt that he was one of the greatest sons of Sindh. He spent much of his life to seek justice for the poor people of Pakistan and died bravely fighting one of the cruelest dictators of all times.

Let us all salute to Nazir Abbasi’s bravery and pray that God will bestow many more Nazir Abbasi to Sindh, who will fight to bring justice to Sindhis and others!

“When They Go, They Leave Their Fragrance Behind”

By Dr. Ahmed Makhdoom

Extremely shocked and grieved to learn about the sad demise of a wonderful, courageous, brilliant and extraordinary son of Mother Sindh, Haleem Brohi.

Personally, I did meet him few times and we had great ‘kutchehries.’ ‘But, he was more near to my brother Zahid Makhdoom, who always made a point to bring Haleem Brohi to our house at Hyderabad as well a Karachi for some discussions! I was extremely enamoured by his humour and forthright straight forwardness.

Halim Brohi was a prolific writer, an innovator and inventor, who was always thinking about bringing changes in our society! Whether it be the language and literature, he was always out there in the forefront in a different way! He will certainly be missed by not just his family and friends, but, by each and every person of our society.

Yes, when such remarkable souls depart, they certainly leave their exuberance behind and surely, leave their fragrance with those left behind!

IBRAHIM JOYO : A LIVING LEGEND OF SINDH

By: Ali Akash

Muhammad Ibrahim Joyo, (1915) a living legend, a great scholar and an enlightened educationist, is one of the most eminent personalities of contemporary Sindhi society, who laid down the lasting foundation of modern thinking- humanism, patriotism and nationalism in Sindh, his homeland, he heartily loves with, and the center of his learned gravity and unshakable commitment. His contributions through his scholarly writings, extensively spread out to the fields of language, pure literature, education and political philosophy/ history and elegant, snave and thought provoking translations, are undoubtedly and unquestionable incredible, conspicuous and highly qualitative in terms of transforming Sindh into a rational, progressive, dynamic and secular society, wherein be no place for any vice and wrong like fatalism, defeatism and obscurantism- the traditional tools historically used for exploitation, slavery and suppression of human-being. One the contrary, he has been the great promoter of the most dignified social values like liberty, fraternity and equality. He has fought a long pen-battle against the forces of retrogressiveness in favor of progressiveness, and for this purpose, he has suffered a lot as well. Ostensibly, he is the Thought-Guru among generations of contemporary Sindh, but at the same while he has got the worth to be counted at par to the great thinkers and scholars of the world, today we live in. He throughout his life has kept in hand preaching a noble cause of goodness, beauty and truth.

Bibi’s Murder and The Establishment

by Mohammad Ali Mahar, Austin, TX

Current hoopla about Gen. Nadeem Ejaz being questioned regarding the murder of Benazir Bhutto, and accusations of his involvement in the murder of Bugti and terrorizing/ torturing other politicians, makes it look as though Ejaz is the only serving ‘establishment’ officer in the history of the country to have resorted to the vicious antics.

Hamida Ghangro, the wife of Shaheed Nazir Abbasi, and all the other evidence presented so far, have been pointing at Brig. Billa, for mercilessly torturing Abbasi to death during Zia’s dark days. Has there been any action against him? Not even a suo moto action from the ‘independent’ judiciary. Not only does the murderer Brigadier enjoy the complete immunity, he is free to insult our intelligence via establishment- sponsored TV talk shows. Na mudaee na shahadat hisaab paak hua – yeh khoon-i-khaak nasheenan thaa rizk-i-khaak hua…..

Those hoping to see Gen. Nadeem and others murderers/ collaborator of Ms. Bhutto’s assassination from within the ‘establishment’ taken to task, must not forget that in the land of the pure, even a petty captain is free to commit any crime he wants with complete impunity.

Does anyone know if any action, even after the change in the army command, has been taken against Captain Hammad, involved in the rape of a lady doctor in Sui, Baluchistan?

Benazir assassination case and the establishment

by: Munwar S.

Now the seasonal frogs have appeared again in the form of A, B, C and Q leagues. These slaves of intelligence agencies are talking all possible non-sense. They are creating ground for the overthrow of elected government as usual to appease their masters and fathers. PPP folks are weak due to their inefficiency as well as the pressure of establishment. What I see is that if PPP starts or dares to investigate .. and intelligence agency monsters in the BiBi case, its government will be overthrown on so many accounts which nobody would think of, as usual. Now we also know the real face of Judiciary which has never been independent rather responsible for the death of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and thousands other innocent people. Things won’t solve anyways without a decisive battle between cruel forces and the innocent people which PPP should get ready for if they want to save people and themselves. Because people will have to do it eventually, sooner the better.

Shaheed Bibi, we are ashamed…

by Iqbal Tareen

CLICK HERE TO WATCH SINDH TV ON SHAHEED BENAZIR BHUTTO

How could we live with our conscious in peace without bringing assassins of Shaheed Raani to justice? Mohtarma was not a private person but a hope for 170 million peoples of Pakistan especially for the poor men, women, and children of Pakistan. No one even her husband or children have right to forgive anyone of her assassins or let them off the hook.

I know Bibi said “Democracy is a best revenge” but democracy without justice can’t deliver the revenge. Let us pledge not to rest until the culprits involved in this heinous crime are sent to court of law.

Let us fill up the streets, ring the tallest bells for justice and send a powerful message to Chief justice Chaudhry Iftikhar that civil society and peoples of Pakistan did not support him for restoration of Chief Justice but justice in Pakistan.

Above documentary was produced and released by Sindh TV News on Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s death anniversary. It is an apology submitted to Shaheed Raani for failing to catch her assassins and conspirators. Please click http://vimeo.com/11411306 to watch this video.

I AM A SINDHI — wrote Gandhiji way back in 1929

…when I first visited Sindh in 1916, it attracted me in a special way and a bond was established between the Sindhis and me that has proved capable of bearing severe strains. “I have been able to deliver to the Sindhis bitter truths without being misunderstood” — wrote Gandhiji way back in 1929.

Actually Gandhiji delivered to Sindh more sweet truths than bitter truths. And, in any case, all these truths indeed established a very warm relationship between Gandhiji and the Sindhis. He visited Sindh seven times — in 1916, 1917, 1920, 1921, 1929, 1931, and 1934. It was “a Sindhi friend” who had helped Gandhi shift from an expensive hotel to economical lodgings when he arrived in London for his law studies. In 1893, C.L. Lachiram, a Sindhi merchant, helped him organize the Natal Indian Congress. In 1899, Barrister Gandhi successfully fought for seven Sindhi traders who were being denied entry into South Africa. He supported the case of K. Hundamal, a silk merchant of Durban, in his articles in the Indian Opinion.

G.M. Syed

“Man’s material and spiritual development is not possible without creating a spirit of universal peace and tolerance. For this, the land of Sindh has an exemplary message: a truly generous respect for mankind. Our venerable ancestors and great saints regarded it as real worship and, for centuries, our people have been a living, proof of the truth and success of this message.” – G.M. Syed

G.M. Syed mainly advocated for non-violence, democracy, secularism (separation of religion from the state), national self-determination, unity among all south Asian nations and states, social and economic equality for all.

Online Petition to Bring all Culprits in Benazir Bhutto’s Murder to Justice

Appeal to Bring all Culprits in Benazir Bhutto’s Murder to Justice

Although it took more than two years for the truth to come out from the UN but finally it came and it holds General (retd.) Pervez Musharraf responsible for the assassination of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. We demand from the Pakistan Government to pursue the cause of justice for Benazir Bhutto vigorously by taking immediate legal action against former Pakistani dictator, his agents and co-conspirators, and government officials pointed out in the UN report. We further demand that Pakistan’s various intelligence agencies, particularly Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) be re-organized so that they will protect our true leaders instead of serving dictators.

United Nations investigation team has identified many powerful individuals, agencies, and high level government officials including General Musharraf and his political allies abating the local investigation and creating a huge smoke screen by tempering evidence and by lying to the media and the world. Hosing down of the crime scene, refusal by ISI and local official to authorize autopsy in spite of the insistence of the medical team, denying required level of security to Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, hurriedly commissioning Scotland Yard team to investigate cause of the death within very narrowly defined scope were a few examples of preemptive attempts by Musharraf regime to fake its sincerity into the investigation of this tragedy.
