Support our Sindhi brothers and sisters in India in their struggle to create the Sindh state

by:Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia

… I appeal to all Sindhis of the world including Sindhis in Sindh to support our Sindhi brothers and sisters in India in their struggle to create the Sindh state. Although, many Sindhis living in India have supported the Rights Movement of Sindhi people in Sindh, most have shown apathy towards Sindhi causes and Sindhi language. This proposal offers an opportunity for two Sindhi groups living in different countries to work for common cause.

I am hopeful that Indian Sindhis and Pakistani Sindhis would strongly support each other and under-take joint projects to promote the use of Sindhi language and protect Sindhi heritage.

Opinion : Why not Sindh State in India if Telangana can be formed?

by: Deepak Keswani

If Central Government feels OK to create the new small states in India, then why not it create a new State named “Sindh State” in India.

Sindh State is being demanded since the India got independence from British empire. Sindhis living in India Lost their motherland in Partition.

If Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal, Jharkhand can be formed, why not Sindh. Why Government of India is behaving like Step Father to Sindhis.Recently Central Government decided to form Telangana State out of Andhra Pradesh. Everyone is trying to protect their cultural heritage and language. Whats wrong with Sindhis?

When tens of new states are being demanded in the name of Telangana, why not Sindhis say anything? Sindhis have made great contributions in Indian Business Development and plenty of NRIs keep adding foreign exchange of country at the cost of what? At the cost of loosing their own culture & language?

In absence of Sindhi state in India, our language at the verge of dying and new Sindhi generation hardly know any traditions & rituals. Indian government recognized Sindh in National Anthem representing the Sindhi culture and Sindhi people living in India. Does that raises a question mark? Is Indian government really doing something for protecting Sindhis’ culture, language and traditions?

Do you think you can do something for protecting our sweet language which very few are proud of speaking?

Pakistan : NFC AWARD PUNJAB STILL USURPER

By Dr Ali AKbar Dhakan

Every Pakistani has been happy and over joyous to hear the news of providing more share of finances to Balochistan and N.W.F.P at the cost of Sindh Province as Punjab did not surrender its share and got the same ratio of funds. It may also be kept in mind that Punjab has already been taking double quantum of finances because of its major representation in the federation as it belongs mostly to Punjab in case of employment in civilian and military or defence organizations and setup. Sindh produces more and generates more income but all income earned by Sindh province goes to federation providing a small chunk of resources from its income to Sindh by federation .The following paragraphs indicate the position in revenue contribution made by all Provinces of Pakistan and revenue recieved by them.

The position is apparent from the data shown by Dawn of November,22-2000. In 1997-98 Sindh contributed Rs.170 billion and the Punjab conributed only Rs.58 billion whereas Sindh recieved only Rs.23 billion and the Punjab recieved Rs.58 billion.During 2001-02 Sindh earned Rs.226 billion but the Punjab earned Rs.80 billion whereas during this year the Sindh got only Rs.32 billion but the Punjab got Rs.77 billion. In this way in the period of 5 years from from 1997-98 to 2001-02, Sindh got only 14% of its shares whereas the Punjab got 94% from all the resources or finances .Now, one can understand how the Sindh province has been deprived of its resources and suffered from all evils of poverty, hunger, deprivation, diseases and socio-economic disorder particularly during the regimes of dictators .People of Sindh have always been neglected not from its resources but from the rights its employment, equal treatment in filling up the posts of heads organizations, banks, departments, corporations etc even in this regime of PPP as the Prime Minister belongs to the Punjab and as not been giving due weightage to the people of Sindh province as the President of Pakistan belonging to Sindh has been caught in the net of propaganda and uncertainity .

OPEN LETTER TO PML-N CHIEF NAWAZ SHARIF

Population Tyranny of Punjab Takes Away Revenues of Sindh

By Javed Qazi, Karachi, Sindh

Respected Sir,

We acknowledge to the fact that you, your family and the Party had struggled at a great length for the restoration of democracy in the country. Your sacrifices have bare fruit that today not only the democracy is restored but also judiciary is relatively independent. We categorically share with you the same principle that these are fundamentally the military dictatorships that have weakened the country and it is only the democratic process which not only strengthens the democracy but shall also make the country become stable and sovereign along with the democratic process. Having this common interest with you today we feel contented to discuss with you this fact as well that ours is the democracy which has federalism as its basic component.

Washington Sindhis Celebrate Sindhi Topi Day

Washington Sindhis Celebrate Sindhi Topi Day and debate Issues and Opportunities faced by Sindhis

By Khalid Hashmani

Sunday, December 6, 2009

Washington, DC – Several Sindhis living in Washington, DC gathered at a local restaurant in Arlington to join their compatriots in Pakistan who celebrated Sindhi Topi (Cap) Day. The event was in reaction to malicious criticism of Pakistani President Asif Zardari, who wore a Sindhi cap while inspecting Guard of Honor in Afghanistan by some members of Pakistani media. Although, Mr., Zardari and the People’s Party of Pakistan (PPP) have lost much credibility among Sindhis, Mr. Zardari is himself of Sindhi origin. The attendees at the Washington DC moot, who wore Sindhi caps and Sindhi Ajraks (a traditional shawl worn by men either as turban or wound around shoulders, and women as shawl), attracted attention from other patrons of the restaurant. The Sindhi attendees proudly explained the purpose of the celebration and briefed them on Ajrak, a form of which was depicted in the excavations of a city that existed 5,000 years ago. The local Sindhis also discussed recent news from Sindh and debated strategies for protecting their culture, language, and identity.

Co-existence

One so called ethnocentric anchor person’s statements on one urdu TV against Sindhi Topi has shaken the sensitive minds in Sindh. No matter we are from any ethnic group, being a non-Sindhi, I support the cultural response from Sindh. One urdu Tv channel speaks the opinion generated by the invisible forces that destabilize peace of country. We belong to varied ethnic groups in Pakistan and the sustainability of the country depends on co-existence. Such elements should be criticized publicly.

by: Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia

The event is supported by the Forum for Justice and Democracy in Pakistan (FJDP) of Silverlining International and Sindhi Excellence Team (SET). The gathering will share Sindhi cultural experiences and stories about Sindhi literature, sites, and sounds. The gathering will also reaffirm the pledge to protect and promote Sindhi language and Sindhi culture.

Proud on Sindhi Topi and Ajrak

LONDON, DECEMBER 2, 2009. World Sindhi Congress expressed its full support and intended participation in “Sindhi Topi and Ajrak Day” (Sindhi Cap and Scarf Wearing Day) being celebrated all over the world on December 6th, 2009. International cultural get-togethers are already planned in London, Manchester, Bristol and Scotland as well as in New York.

Sindh, currently within the geo-political boundaries of Pakistan and homeland to 35 million Sindhi people, has an aboundingly rich culture, heritage and language dating back thousands of years. Since its inclusion in Pakistan, six decades ago, the indigenous people of Sindh have suffered systematic and institutionalized marginalization of their language and culture.

MQM to support Sindhi Topi Day

SINDH – Karachi: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, an ally of the Pakistan People’s Party-led ruling coalition at the centre and in Sindh, announced its support to the call for observing Dec 6 as Sindhi Topi Day.

“Sindhi topi and ajrak have been symbols of the Sindhi culture and civilisation for thousands of years and all the people of Sindh have an emotional attachment with these cultural symbols,” said MQM chief Altaf Hussain in a statement from his London office.

He said the communities living in other provinces and areas of Pakistan have their culture and traditions and different languages, “therefore, nobody should raise objections to Sindhi Topi Day and all Pakistanis should respect other communities’ cultures.”

He urged that there must be no statement or speech that hurts the feelings of any ethnic group and that one should respect other cultures just like their own and refrain from attacks. He said MQM extends its full support to all the people of Sindh, including mothers, sisters, elders, the youth and children on Sindhi Topi Day. Sindh government’s PPP and its coalition partner, the Awami National Party, have already announced their support to Sindhi Top Day and the MQM has also joined in the celebrations for the cultural day of Sindh. irfan ali

Sindhi Topi day : whole Pakistan should observe

by: Ali Nawaz Memon, Maryland

I remember President Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin when Germany was divided and felt in pain. He stood up and said WE ALL ARE BERLINERS. He did not become Berliner but in one sentence he shared pain of all Germans and expressed his soliderity with them.

Today, Sindhis feel insecure, deprived, less developed and hurt in Pakistan. I believe that it is duty of every Pakistani to stand up and identify themselves with Sindhis. What is easier than wearing Sindhi topi on december 6th?

I urge you to wear Sindhi Topi on December 6 and I urge all of Pakistanis to wear it and show solidarity with Sindhi people and culture.

Sindhi Culture under attack by Pakistani Media

by: Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia

For many years, Pakistan’s exploiting class including Urdu and some English media have been engaged in a malicious propaganda against Sindhi culture and language. First, they and short-sighted custodians of Sindh destroyed Sindh’s education system which was once envy of other provinces. Their particular assault was against Sindhi-medium schools that has ultimately resulted in the closure of more 7,000 Sindhi-medium schools in Sindh. This conspiracy has succeeded so much that many of Sindh’s middle class and upper middle class parents send their children to only the English and Urdu medium schools. Seeing the success of this conspiracy, the enemies of Sindhi culture and language have now extended their assault against Sindhi dress and other cultural aspects.

Sindhis would welcome U.S. consulate in Sukkur

by: Gul Agha

The Pakistani press has no problem keeping the consulates in Karachi and Lahore. But now that the US is taking an interest in disbursing billions of dollars in education and development assistance funds directly to Sindhi areas, they are screaming against US consulate in Sindhi area, calling it “suspicious”. A consulate in Sakharu should a…lso help Sindhis get visas and improve cultural exchanges, as I have heard that the Pakistani staff in the cities is sometimes hostile and biased against their cases. For Sindhis, it would be a very welcome move to have a consulate in Sakharu, and it will help the US understand the Sindhi perspective, thus improving relations with U.S.

A wonderful folk Sindhi song – Peirein Pawandee Saan..

by: Ahmed-Makhdoom, London, U.K.

A wonderful young man from my motherland, an illustrious and brilliant son of Jeejal Sindhrree, Joji Shaikh Saaeen, may Lord reward him for his Sindhyat and Sindhiness, sent me a video of an old nostalgic Sindhi folk song:پيزين پوندي سان چوندي سان Peirein Pawandee Saan..

Beautiful rendition of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s Peirein Pawandee Saan, Chawandee Saan – an immortal and immaculate Sindhi folk song – ably and comfortably sung by Renu Gidoomal and beautifully and decently presented in a dance form by a young Sindhi girl. Thses were the Sindhis, who are not living in their motherland, – they live in India. Still, they have not forgotten their beautiful heritage and what their culture is, traditions, norms, practices, principles and decent ways of life are.

Like a true  Sindhi, Saainni Renu gave a beautiful rendition of ‘peirein pawandee saan,’ that brought age-old memories trickling by, when I used to go to the shrine of  Bhittai Saaeen and listen to the faqeers of the Bhittai darbaar. At one such pilgrimage to the shrine, I was in company of Madam Annemarie Schimmel, according to her, a true “joggiaannee” and “faqeeriyaannee” of SaaIeen Bhitai ghottu. She used to call me ‘Cactus of Thar’ (Thooharr)

On that occasion, too, she asked me, “Thooharr, can you ask faqeer saaeen to sing, ‘peirein pawandee saan, chawandee saan‘?” She was mesmerised by this song and with quivering voice and tears wailing from her eyes she started to sing in whispers along with the noble faqeers. She was a foremost, formidable and famous admirer of Bhittai Saaeen, and used to refer to him as her ‘murshid.’

Opinion : Why this March is not so much effective?

by Jamil Junejo, Hyderabad, Sindh

Long March of Awami Tehrik from Kashmore to Karachi designed for multiple agendas is in way with vigor and enthusiasm towards its destinations. We can’t resist the temptation of paying glowing tribute to the marchers, walking in scorching sun, especially to daughters of this soil.

Awami Tehrik enjoys a large amount of proportion in contribution towards nationalist politics of Sindh. Some of the most significant aspects of politics of Awami Tehrik can be summed up thus: To evaluate and the analyze the issues in very scientific manner in light of local and international changing realities and to formulate its policies accordingly ;to highlight and create role of women in politics;to explode the myth that nationalist politics of Sindh is only confined to the parties and groups affiliated with ideology of Saeen G.M Sayed and to discard the impression that the from and manifestation of nationalist politics determined by G.M Sayed’s affiliated groups is final an determintal ; to integrate art with politics where by producing it vigiour, enthususiasm, spirit and charm;to create a reasonable and balanced blending of various existing political trends in Sindh viz, democratic, leftist and nationalist into its slogan of Qomi, Awami, Jamhoori, Tabqati Inqalab; and to promote trend of ideological orientation and training into politics.

BHAGAT KANWER RAM – A SINDHI SAINT

By Kalavanti Raja

Sindh has been blessed with many saints and mystics. One of the most popular saints, in recent times, was Bhagat Kanwer Ram, born in a small village in upper Sindh in 1885 in a grocer’s family. Even as a child, he showed great talent for singing and his father put him up with a prominent holy man in the area – Saeen Satramdas. From this Guru, he imbibed spiritual teachings, a sense of genuine humility and love for a simple life.

Sindhi NGOs/other Organizations Need to show Initiative and Drive

Khalid Hashmani

Where are the Sindhi Organizations when other Pakistani NGOs showcase their Wares?

By: Khalid Hashmani

October 2009 — Washington, D.C. has seen many visitors from Pakistani NGOs in the last two weeks. They were here to secure funding for their pet projects under the Enhanced Partnership with Pakistan Act of 2009. A State Department official commented that no final decision has been made whether the new assistance will be channeled mainly through the Pakistani Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) or through the traditional way through USAid department with focus on government-to-government transactions. The Pakistani NGOs, some in collaboration with their US partners showcasing their capabilities and marketing their expertise. The irony is that none of these organizations have any roots in Sindh or Balochistan, where Human Development Index (HDI) is one of the lowest in the world. None of the NGOs officials making presentations had any abilities in the Sindhi and Balochi languages; much of their focus was securing projects in Sindh. A presenter even commented that the Punjab Government does not want much privatization of their public education system. Many in the local Washington Sindhi community are fearful that just as Islamabad government officials have not been fair in distribution of resources to Sindh and Balochistan, so will these Islamabad-based NGOs would divert major portion of the new US funding for their pet projects at the cost of Sindh and Balochistan. In order to ensure that such malicious designs do not succeed, this article provides information about these NGOs, about their claims that they are already running many private schools, health centers, and micro finance projects in Sindh. It is hoped that people of Sindh and Balochistan would be diligent and help verify whether or not such claims are true. Further, in the event that non-Sindhi organizations do win major projects in Sindh, Sindhis ought to monitor their performance and report on any discrepancies to ensure that true beneficiaries of the funds allocated to any projects in Sindh would be Sindhis.
