‘Flood-hit women abandoned by govt, relief agencies

SINDH: KARACHI – The worst victims of the last year’s flood have been the women of the province as the government and other relief agencies did not give them priority while their issues still remain largely unaddressed.

This was pointed out by speakers at a dialogue held on women rights hosted by women wing of Sindhi Association of North America. SANA vice-president Noor Nisa Ghanghro presided over the session, which was attended by a large number of political and women rights’ activists.

The speakers emphasised that all poverty-alleviation programmes must address the gender poverty issue while particularly focusing on rural women

Expressing grave concern over a recent report from the flood-hit areas of Sindh that over a million rural women were suffering from blood anaemia, they demanded that the authorities concerned should take the issue seriously and immediately help the womenfolk of the province. …

Five generals threw their support behind protesters calling for immediate ouster of Yemeni President, General Saleh pledged his support for protesters and for the first time, his troops stood around the demonstration to protect it.

Senior Yemeni Officers Call for Ouster of President

SANA, Yemen — In a significant erosion of military support for Yemen’s embattled president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, five generals on Monday threw their support behind protesters calling for his immediate ouster as rival soldiers took up positions in different sections of the capital.

The generals were Brig. Gen. Ali Mohsin Saleh, a powerful figure who commands forces in the country’s northwest, three other brigadier generals and a general. The five said they had decided to support the protesters after watching the bloody clashes on Friday.

“I declare on their behalf our peaceful support for the youth revolution and that we are going to fulfill our complete duty in keeping the security and stability in the capital,” General Saleh said in an interview on Al Jazeera on Monday. He said that violence against protesters was “pushing the country to the edge of civil war.”

By Monday afternoon, tanks and soldiers loyal to the president were positioned around the presidential palace, while miles away, those directed by General Saleh pledged their support for protesters and, for the first time, stood around the demonstration to protect it.

Some of the soldiers at the demonstration draped black, white and red ribbons over their chest, the colors of Yemen’s flag. “We are with the people,” said a group of soldiers guarding the main entrance of the protest. …

Pakistan doesn’t have any better friend than me, Ram Jethmalani says

Huston, TX: Ram Jethmalani, the former Indian Union minister, the former member of Rajya Sabha and president of the Supreme Court of India, said that I am the representative of the scattered Sindhi people living around the globe. He was speaking in Houston at the 26th annual convention of the Sindhi Association of North America as a Chief Guest. He said that I was forcefully separated from my motherland during partition of subcontinent. I have experienced living as a refugee but I’ve never thought about revenge. In the refugee camp, I had thought that if India and Pakistan will not become friends, then they will both be destroyed and with that belief I have lived in India. He said that I want to claim that Pakistan doesn’t have any better friend then me in India. He said, I respect all religions and every person has a right to live his life according to his religious beliefs. He said, “Please have courage to speak the truth. We are going through a very delicate situation today if our youngsters do not learn and pick up the courage to speak the truth. The democracy will never survive and the freedom will disappear from our hands.” His emphasis was on the need and importance of education. He said “no society can survive without education.” and “Democracy without education is hypocrisy without limitations.” He said there are two signs of Sindhi sabhita (Sindhi culture).  “One is internal which is to serve the people and the other one is language. He said the essence of sindhyat is secularism”.

North American Sindhis demand

Please convey the views and demands of SANA members and SANALIST subscribers to Sindhi leaders as SANA delegate meets them over coming days. I am attaching below a copy of the SANA resolutions that were passed at the the 25th SANA convention and express the key demands and sentiments of the convention attendees. In addition, the recent concerns expressed on SANALIST include the following:

1. It is imperative that the government fairly and equitably allocate funds and implement improvements in all cities, towns, and villages of Sindh. Many overseas visitors to Sindh have noticed tangible improvements in the non-Sindhi areas of Karachi and Hyderabad. But, the situation in the Sindhi areas and the other localities continue to remain hopeless. The basic services such as garbage collection, sanitary and sewage, roads, and drinking water supply have worsen each year. The Sindh government must select five (5) cities, ten (10) towns, and twenty (20) villages in Sindh as models and immediately implement a program of improved municipal services. This program should include training of local volunteers and incentives that encourage residents to create a self-supporting system for maintaining of the basic civic services. Once these models become showcase and a “best practice”, the program should be extended to other cities, towns, and villages of Sindh.

2. Demand from the Sindh Government officials to do their best to secure the release of Aakash Mallah, Vice Chairman of the Sindh nationalist party Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), and JSQM activist Noor Mohammad Khaskheli. These political workers were abducted on 30th October and are believed to be the victims of enforced disappearances by government security officials.

3. The “Friends of Indus Forum”, a group associated with World Wide Fund (WWF) have recently expressed grave concerns over the worsening situation of the wetlands and Indus eco-region sites of Sindh and said the acute shortage of water in Indus River has badly affected the general ecology of the province. The SANA delegate should demand from the government to create a nation-wide awareness campaign about this calamity and secure agreement from all provinces to allocate some amount of water to save the dying wetlands of Sindh.

4. Effective yesterday (January 1, 2010), the local government system has become a provincial subject in three provinces of Pakistan except in Sindh. Click the following link of a recent article published in DAWN for more details: http://www.dawn.com/wps/wcm/connect/dawn-content-library/dawn/the-newspaper/front-page/12-system-continues-in-sindh-nazims-reign-ends-in-three-provinces–bi-09

All district Nazims in Punjab, Balochistan, and NWFP are supposed to stop functioning and the provincial governments are said to have appointed local administrators until fresh elections can be held. The Article 140-A of Pakistan Constitution says: “Each province shall, by law, establish a local government system and devolve political, administrative and financial responsibility and authority to the ‘elected representatives’ of the local governments.” Thus, denying this important provision of provincial autonomy is injustice to Sindh.

The newspaper reports say that MQM is prepared to accept this change provided that no new administrators are appointed and local government elections are held within three (3) months. Ironically, this ill-advised move of the present government indirectly supports the plan to separate Karachi and Hyderabad from rest of Sindh as it strengthens the claim that Karachi and Hyderabad city governments are operating without being the subject of Sindh provincial government. This is a serious setback to the geographic integrity of Sindh.

On behalf of the SANA members, the visiting SANA leaders must demand from the federal government to extend this provision to Sindh and hold local government elections in Sindh under the new provisions within three months.

I hope that SANA leaders will take courageous stands for promotion and protection of Sindhi rights and effectively represent the views and demands of SANA community.

Wishing you success in your meetings!

SAPAC Inaugural becomes Congressmen’s Town Hall Meeting and Sindhi Katchahry (Gathering)

By Khalid Hashmani

Washington DC, September 16, 2009 – Sindhi American Political Action Committee (SAPAC) was inaugurated in Washington DC. This is a milestone step for the Sindhi American community that community hopes will help in restoring and preserving Sindhi Rights. The inaugural session was very well organized and in fact turned into a Congressmen’s Town Hall meeting and Sindhi Katchahry, which is a traditional village gathering where village elders and town folks share their hopes, concerns, and sorrows. The meeting was held at the Washington Court Hotel near the US Capitol Bulling. The moot was addressed by Congressman Gary Ackermann, Congressman Brad Sherman, Selig Harrison, and Marvin Weinbaum. The guests were welcomed by Dr. Maqbool Halepota and Munawar Laghari, President Director of SAPAC respectively. After formal addresses, a lively Town Hall meeting (Sindhi Katchahry) was held with Congressman Sherman and Sindhi participants. The meeting was admirably moderated by Leila Agha and Hanne Bursch.

Let us recall the words of Mr. Palijo

R.B. Palijo

Azhar Ali Shah, Sindh

“05-07-2001 SANA Convention in Chicago, Illinois, Rasool Bux Palijo urged every educated Sindhi to read more – learn more about world history, freedom struggles, and particularly the military and political strategies. You don’t need every Sindhi to be educated to bring about a change. What you need is smart leaders and smart middle class who can predict and understand each move of adversary and quickly make a counter move and take an offensive move, when appropriate. He added that he was quite hopeful in the ability of Sindhis to withstand all onslaughts and ultimately come out victorious. Let! there be no doubt that these Sindhi Sapoots and followers of Shah Abdul Latif will never give up on their rights. They will not vanish in the history. They will resist and fight until they are victorious. By this time every one in the audience so attentive that other than his words, there was no other sound. Even the Sindhi infants, who never seem to stop crying, seem to have been taken aback by what was happening around them.

Asanjhi pyari Sindh

by: Dial and Lachmi Gidwani, USA

Please allow me to briefly accompany you back to the most memorable events over the weekend of July 04, 2009. For me, personally, it was a heart felt pleasure and a great honor to be a guest at the SANA retreat. I have rarely felt myself so welcome. It is sometimes harder than one can imagine, to simply finding the right words in a state of emotional ecstasy. For the first time, my wife and I met Sindhis from Sindh, we could listen and converse in our mother tongue Sindhi and relive our roots – and indeed my very self – after 61 years. I feel that I am backing home after 61 years.

I was rightly asked by some Sindhis present the best question: “Why did you leave us? We are lonely without you.” My honest response: Circumstances changed and conditions prevailed that forced us to leave and no one could stop the exodus. With silent tears we departed peacefully from our motherland in the firm belief that we would return.

Launch a Sindhi Rights movement or Alliance of Action

by: Khalid Hashmani, Mclean, Virginia, USA

Naseer Memon has written a timely article on the critical need for starting a unified struggle by all Sindhi political parties for the Sindhi Rights. The current situation is quite alarming as neither the Poples’ Party of Pakistan (PPP) nor the Sindhi Nationalist parties are truly and effectively representing Sindhi interests. This need is also being felt by overseas Sindhis. Last week, one of the largest organization of overseas Sindhis, Sindhi Association of North America (SANA) passed a resolution appealing to both PPP and Sindhi nationalist parties to join hands and secure Sindhi rights and protect Sindhi interests. The article says that the following issues are causing a great deal of disappointment and feeling of helplessness among Sindhis:

1. Sindhis in general feel that nothing has changed in the last one and half year. It seems like their treatment by the provincial and central governments is the same as in the days of dictator Musharraf’s regime.

Sindhis of North America celebrate 25th Convention with gusto and an eye on future generation

By: Khalid Hashmani, USA

St. Louis – July 6, 2009 – The 25th convention of Sindhi Association of North America (SANA) was successfully ended in St. Louis , Missouri today. It was a historic event with more than 500 registered attendees. The programs included Adabi (Literary) session, SANA Vision Brainstorming session, several medical seminars, women programs, speaker’s forums, and General Body meeting of SANA members. One of the most important aspect of the convention was extra-ordinary musical, fashion, and plays organized and acted by Sindhi youth depicting conflicts and convergence of the cultures of their new country and their parents’ Sindhi heritage. Indeed it was like witnessing passing of baton from the grey hair generation to the young adult generation of North American Sindhis.

Positivity outweighs negativity

By Munawar Laghari, Washington, DC, USA

As I suggested at the SANA ‘Vision’ Session, in St. Louis, USA, I will be happy to assist in many areas. I will do what ever I can do for the ‘Sindh Cause’ from any platform. I have a firm belief that there are all means and tools available to work for the future generation of Sindhis, provided we lay a solid ground of cooperation and create a conducive environment for them. For a long time, we are passing through very difficult times. Presently, when the most alarming challenge is the false impression that “Sindhis are now ruling Sindh”. We need to create a new momentum for Sindh. I understand and cannot underemphasize the fact that any major change will have to come from within Sindh itself. However, we the Diaspora can contribute very effectively to gear up the efforts of our sisters and brothers in Sindh, by offering our best from outside of Sindh all over the world. In June 2009, I attended the United Nations Human Rights Council Conference, held in Geneva, Switzerland. This was a great opportunity for me to meet our very dear and respectable friend and representative of World Sindhi Congress, Madam Suriya Makhdoom. Through our extremely useful exchange of ideas, we came to a clear understanding of some strategies for future plans and projects. Hence, I am willing to coordinate with all other Sindhi Forums and organizations, in order to build a better concerted and result oriented initiatives of all Sindhi overseas Organizations in whichever capacity I may be able to contribute in.

Dear friends, the challenge we all are confronted with is exponential. We need to be ready to face it by getting serious, sincere, honest and positive.

Desperation and Urge to Organize

It was early 1984, when the clouds of cruelty and discrimination in the form of General Zia’s regime overpowered Sindh and its people. The news of killing of scores innocent villagers demanding restoration of democracy and political rights had become unbearable for few Sindhis, who then lived in the vast continent of North America. Often they shared their pain and sorrows and mourned the inability of Sindhis back home to secure their rights.
