Opinion : Why not Sindh State in India if Telangana can be formed?

by: Deepak Keswani

If Central Government feels OK to create the new small states in India, then why not it create a new State named “Sindh State” in India.

Sindh State is being demanded since the India got independence from British empire. Sindhis living in India Lost their motherland in Partition.

If Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal, Jharkhand can be formed, why not Sindh. Why Government of India is behaving like Step Father to Sindhis.Recently Central Government decided to form Telangana State out of Andhra Pradesh. Everyone is trying to protect their cultural heritage and language. Whats wrong with Sindhis?

When tens of new states are being demanded in the name of Telangana, why not Sindhis say anything? Sindhis have made great contributions in Indian Business Development and plenty of NRIs keep adding foreign exchange of country at the cost of what? At the cost of loosing their own culture & language?

In absence of Sindhi state in India, our language at the verge of dying and new Sindhi generation hardly know any traditions & rituals. Indian government recognized Sindh in National Anthem representing the Sindhi culture and Sindhi people living in India. Does that raises a question mark? Is Indian government really doing something for protecting Sindhis’ culture, language and traditions?

Do you think you can do something for protecting our sweet language which very few are proud of speaking?

  1. I believe we should stop discussing this here only, bcoz there is hardly anything left to save sindhi culture in india. Our generation feel shy speaking in their mother tongue and very few of us know how to speak sindhi properly. But this language will remain in some part of pakistan since there are around 2 crore people in pak who uses sindhi in their day to day life. In india we sindhi guys and girls have started doing inter caste marriage and that to at a very large scale, this will give biggest shock to our efforts in the direction of saving our culture and language.
So moral of the story sindhi culture is on the verge of extinction and if one wanna save it then one need to come up with some concrete plan or action which should be applicable to all sindhis of this country or else we should assume that there was nothing like sindhi culture in our country.

    1. all sindhi brothers indian and pakistani just one think i wanna say we are one, one thing is pasative in use we love our sweet languange and paradise sindh. plz struggle keep struggling untill u get sindh province in india. sindhi person are involve in politics like advani than u must reach in front of him and let him feel for sindh province. in pakistan we have strong sindhi media news paper and t.v chanels and popular sindhi music but in india u will have to strruggle if u r real son of sindhi languange. i love u love every sindhi love our sweet languange pls save it.

  2. I ‘m not from sindhi caste but I do feel that a sindh state should be restored otherwise the whole sindhi culture will disappear !

  3. Deepak,
You need to send a letter to our prime minister since you are well informed about the need for a Sindh State. If we as Sindhis don’t fight for ourselves, no one else will.

  4. Good to know that Indian Sindhies have little bit passion, and love towards a mother land sindh,1947 partition on the basis of religion was great blunder of indians (muslims and Hindus) kamshmir issue must be resolved and attitude must be changed,so that sindhies, panjabies, balochs, and Pashtoons and Kashmiries can make cultural and economic relations across the regional borders.

  5. Every Sindhi in India would like a Sindh state. But where would it be located? All of Sindhi native land is in Pakistan. So I suggest we reclaim land from Arabian Sea, like Flevoland in the Netherlands. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flevoland)

That way, we will have a state without taking a part of another state’s native land.

  6. according to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar every 3 crore population can have a new state subject to geographical, economical and resources but not basing on a community or language

    1. At the time of partition Sindh State was declared as part of Pakistan. Sindhis were humiliated, attacked, killed and forced to leave their native land.

Sindhis literally started from scratch in India, without any home, without any job or land or money. Thats like you get a snake on the game of snakes & ladders which drops you to block zero. While most of other communities were getting enough of ladders because of State facilities, Sindhis moved up block by block. Every Sindhi in India has this scary story down three generations.

6 decades of trials and tribulation has ensured Sindhis not to grow but to reduce. If that will be the condition Sindhis will never re-gain their Lost State.

I’ve only one question: Who decided this that my home should be part of different country?

      1. Although Sindhis have progressed economically there is a strong feeling of discontent and isolation with regards to their homeland. Like Punjabis demanded their home state which is present day Punjab in India , Sindhis could have had their land nearby Karachi . However this sadly did not happen due to various reasons. It is not too late however. Sindhis should try to get more access to their motherland i.e the ONLY option available and this will not happen easily. The efforts to resolve the mistake which happened during partition should be started now.

I estimate the biggest hurdle would be the Punjabis in Pakistan since they have a strong desire to colonise and flood Sindh and Balochistan with migrant Punjabis and ultimately make the local Sindhis and Balochis there insignificant.

          1. Sindh civilisation is one of the oldest so aukat ki baat nahi karna behtar hai. Once the local sindhi populace in Sindh realise the true intentions of Punjabis and Mohajirs (Mohajirs as they are called (derogatory term as it is) should go back to india since sindh is not their motherland) Sindhis will start to counter them and will need the help of indian fellow sindhis to restore the rights over their own land and culture.

Else in a few decades there will be nothing like Sindh and Balochistan there will be ONLY Punjab and extremism and the
problems that come with it. Punjabis are a immature lot and they will not understand this easily .

          2. you must be retarded. sindhi hindus were the warriors who protected india from invaders during the 1st-15th century. without sindhi hindus there wouldn’t be gujju hindus now.

  7. Telangana was a separate state before 1956, it is not a new state. Basing telugu language both andhra and telangana was formed as andhra pradesh. Before formation of state of andhra pradesh in 1956, there was an agreement called ” gentlemen agreement” is the root cause for on going agitation. according to the agreement the the deputy CM post must be kept for a talangana leader in case the CM is from the other region, Mulki rules should be followed during recruitments, a regional standing committee has to be formed to oversee the allocation of funds, sale of agricultural land in talangana should be banned. the injustice was done to talangna people in water allocation, education and employment. the above agreement was ignored by the rulers. The telangana people are demanding ante status as it was in 1956 therefore it is not a new state it is only bifurcation. in view of the failure of the agreement and it was a pre condition.

  8. Gandhidham is part of Kutch and belongs to Kutchis , Same with Jaisalmer which belongs to Rajasthanis and so on. It was a grave mistake of Sindhi Leaders not to ask for their motherland from Sindh province which is now in pakistan. Instead of trying to establish their land on other communities motherland which would be graver mistake causing other problems, it is best that Sindhis start some struggle and do some sacrifice for share of their own motherland from present day Sindh since it rightfully belongs to them. What is the use of so much wealth and influence if Sindhis cannot live or even visit their Motherland Sindh.

Instead of aligning with Punjabis(in pakistan) who are bent upon dominating, harassing and ultimately sidelining Sindhis and other communities(Balochis,Seraikis,Pashtuns,..) , Sindhis should fight for their land in Sindh , Pakistan. This is the ONLY way to solve the long term isolation and depression in Hindu Sindhis due to the denied access to their Great Motherland i.e. Sindh.

  9. Dear Deepak.
I think the separate state of sindhi people in India is need of the day. That can only be achieved through struggle. Therefore I will request our sindhi brothers living world wide to support our indian sindhi brothers through all means. If sindhis of subcontinent desire to be identified or want to save/protect culture, language and geography, must be united, whether in india/pakistan or any other part of the world. Lot of sacrification is required. I am sure if all sindhis unite, then no one can restrict them to create sindh state in india rather will be in a position to move towards Greater Sindh. First of all we will have to bring trust among each other, which has been lost during partition. Though some home work in this context has been done, but more efforts are to me made with out wasting any further time.
    I fully support this movement.

  10. Dear Keswani,
Why not you asking for Great Sindh (iN Raja Dahar’s time) when boundaries were from Kashmir to Sea and Kathiawar. so I thin we should demand for that Sindh from India and Pakistan than we will save the culture and language of Sindhi,s

    1. I think it really doesn’t matter how big the Sindh State in India is. Even if it is of size of Goa or any union territory that is sufficient. The point is Government should recognize the existence of community.

Sindh India mein ache ta Aseen Jindh Pir, Manhooro ain Sakkhar ji pul wari thahidaseen.

Then even Sindhis can tell to friends “I am going to my native village”

  11. and too support my previous answer..pls check out articles on:

Gandhidham, Kutchi, Jaisalmer and ulhasnagar in en.wikipedia.com

The names of these places are written in sindhi script in bracket..a feature which wikipedia uses in case of dominant languages only!

  12. Thats what I was also thinking…
There has never been a demand for a sindhi state in India…I was going through newspapers and I was shocked to see that why haven’t sindhis demanded a saperate state for them…
Just like union territory of pondicherry, which has distant territories from ruling territory, a similar concept can be applied for building s sindhi terrirory.
Kutch( including gandhidham) and Kathiawar of present day Gujarat can form 1st part of the region since many sindhis were settled in gandhidham, and Kutchi is also a dialect of sindhi. Kutchis worship jhulelal, and even wikipedia encyclopedia says Kutchi is a sindhi dialect…just like larkana and sukkur dialects of sindhi..
Jaisalmer and adjoining territories also has many sindhi migrants, and the original inhabitants speak thari, which is also a dialect of sindhi according to wikipedia..This can form part 2 of sindhi state.
Third part can be ulhasnagar…which has more than 80% sindhis…It is located near bombay…

So on the whole, a concept of sindhi state is not difficult, it only requires active participation.
On the whole, it is a concept similar to present day pondicherry.

Here is a link to a question which i asked at yahoo answers:

  13. Strange!!!
Somebody posted this mail on blog.

This is chicken and egg story, Sindhis are dispersed because since 6 decades they don’t have any State in India.

There is no particular location or co-ordinates which can be declared as Sindh State. That matter is debatable and Central Govt can provide any small barren land to Sindhis for the sake of recognizing the Sindhis as part of India. I am sure Sindhis will fund enough to construct and make that their native land in India.

  14. Dear Deepak,

National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language in India says:
“Among the modern Indian language, Sindhi is the only language which is not an official language of any particular state. Hence being a stateless language, special efforts are required for its growth and preservation of its literary heritage.”

I think the main reason that Sindhi is not an official language of any state in India is becuase Sindhi speaking people are dispersed in different cities of different states. Would it be possible to know the coordinates of the proposed Sindh State please?
