The same old song

There goes Amreeka Bahadur, once again doing exactly the wrong thing. As quoted in this newspaper of record Richard Holbrooke, the czar of American policy planning for Afghanistan and Pakistan (Afpak) who will soon be in Islamabad the Beautiful, has recently said: “Political instability is always a concern in any country … but if we are asked, and people think it will help, as in the past, we will (help).”

He then went and really put his foot in it: “We are watching (the situation) with sympathy and support for the elected government.”

While he did try and retrieve the situation by adding the word ‘support’ and by further saying: “… but we are friends of the Pakistani people and of the elected government”, he went and did it again: the United States, he said, also had good relations and respect for the Pakistani military which had taken actions in difficult conditions.

Diet may help to control Aids!

Why are some people with Aids (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) actually HIV- negative? The old traditional wisdom tells that a healthy person easily resists foreign invaders, while a weak one is susceptible to almost every thing. Based on this philosophy a healthy diet is an important to control the Aids.
Fresh washed vegetables are rich in several vitamins, mineral and antioxidants. Raw vegetable and fruits are good source of enzymes. Vitamin C and E work together as a team to fight with free radicals to save us from a damage to our system. Aids patients need considerable amounts of vitamin C to build immunity to protect against the infection. Vitamin C stimulates white cell activity and helps the cells to surround viruses, different studies supports vitamin Cs ability to inhibit the replication of HIV and other pathogenic microorganisms. This may help: Taking 1 gram (1000 mg) vitamin C five times a day everyday may helps not to spread Aids quickly. The human friendly bacteria which found in yogurt help rebuild the micro flora in the intestine that have been weakened by repeated antibiotic. Therefore, yogurt has immune- boosting effects. Garlic has great antiviral properties; it works as a natural antibiotic, antiviral and anti-fungal. It has proven effectiveness again viruses such as herpes I, II, and shingles because of its ability to suppress human cytomegalovirus in vitro it may work against HIV virus. Garlic helps to protect from free radical damage and it eliminate toxins from the system. Garlic is contains allicin. Allicin compound is an antibacterial and antiviral agent. Vitamin B complex  daily is important for building up red blood cells and activating natural killer cells. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant to help increase the cell’s antiviral capabilities. Magnesium and Zinc are trace minerals. Several studies show that the supplement of 10 mg of Magnesium and 05 mg of Zinc improves immune function of the body.  And the juice of greens or fresh vegetables such as Carrots, beets, garlic, ginger, lemons, and bitter melon is a good and may help to reduce spreading Aids. Try not to consume sugar and sugar products, Cake and cookie products, and white flour products because it literally feed the virus to grow quickly. Eat deep water fish. Drink 8 to 12 glasses of crystal clean fresh water.

Poor Conditions Of Roads In Sindh

By Dr Ali Akbar Dhakan

During my visit to rural Sindh from Karachi after a long time, I found very dangerous condition of link roads even of main roads from Sehwan to Ratodero and Naudero. The single roads already constructed about 30-40 years ago were left without shoulders at the both sides of all roads. They have been so much in derogatory, dilapidated and dangerous conditions for vehicle plying on single main roads looking like big holes and pits dug at both sides of them and the running of vehicles have met with terrible accidents many times which became the cause of loosing thousands lives from time to time. It seems the road authorities do not care and look after all the roads but wait for loss of lives due to recurring accidents and wait for their earning from contracts of construction of whole roads and they do not feel their duties to maintain the roads when at various places, they get holes and pits on them. When the roads become out of use and running on them become difficult, they prepare estimates of contracts of the whole roads and start digging and scratching them. In this way they start process of constructing new roads and take about half a century to get it completed and make it worth for running of vehicles. As a first phase, a large distance of about 30-40 Kms is dug, and dust is poured in them to make it at high side and put stones and keep it stony for many years with the result of losses of lives and vehicles as their tyres burst out and the vehicles become unable to run on such roads which are under repairs or construction. The best example we found from Dadu, Mehar, Nasirabad, Wagan, Khairpur juso up to the Larkana city. At the other side, we faced such miserable difficulty at the under construction road from Nasirabad to Badah-Moenjo Daro upto the Larkana City. How the people of the above areas live and pass their lives as they face such difficulties daily. Even in the city of Larkana at many places all internal roads and streets were full of water and holes and illegal breakers constructed by local authorities of the city showing the best proof of the neglected and apathetic attitude towards the welfare and health of the people living in the city. If some where work on repairs was started but it was run on the whims of the authorities without any checks and speed. The next experience of roads we saw when we visited Thatta, sujawal to Tando Muhammad Khan Road and later on from Thatta to pir pitho. It is shameful on the part of the local Govt authorities to neglect and ignore such dangerous roads, link as well as main roads throughout the whole Sindh Province. We saw that those roads were constructed during the first regime of PPP Chairman Shaheed Zulfiqar Bhutto but remained unrepairable and reconstructed since about 40 years. Are the authorities concerned treating the people of these areas as animals and belonging to inhuman generations. For God’s sake, the PPP regime should take these tasks and save the people of all the areas in interior Sindh from tragic accidents and loss of precious lives and vehicles as well and financial loss. The latest example of accident is of a very young MPA of Sindh Minister Mr. Jalil Memon of Thatta and his brothers while going from the Thatta to Pir Pitho through a very dangerous single road having no shoulders and borders at both sides constructed 30-40 years ago. It is therefore suggested to the chief secretary and CM Sindh to get all the old roads reconstructed with necessary shoulders or borders at the both sides of all single roads. This will save many lives and financial loss of the people of Sindh and Pakistan.

Vitamin C a powerful antioxidant which enhance immune system and help to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and certain cancers. Vitamin E a powerful antioxidant which stabilizes cell remembrance, may reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and cancer. Insights about the future developments in Pakistan

by: Tausif Kamal

Interesting and divergent insights about the future developments in Pakistan by Dr. Manzur and Kamran Shafi Saheb : one concluding that the military will continue with its Jihadi nexus unabated while the other forecasting the the military will have no choice but to completely eliminate every Jihadist/ Taliban groups in the country. Though I’ve high regard for their thoughtful analysis of the Pakistan milieu and their underlying love of the country, it seems to me that both these conclusions are apparently based upon not-so-accurate assumptions of military.

Dr Manzur seems to argue that once the military realizes that its own privileges, and the state of Pakistan are threatened and the country is stalked by lawlessness and a collapsing economy, the military ” will have no choice but to eliminate all Jihadi groups one by one. ” Kamran Shafi Saheb , on the other hand, says that ” It will be far too late by the time the brass hats of the Army realise that ALL Jihadi groups are bad Jihadis’ and take action against them.” I think both these opinions mistakenly assign too omniscient and omnipresent a role to the military. The Army is not the sole arbiter of Pakistan’s destiny ; the entire future of our country doesn’t lie only in its hands.

First of all, it’s a no-brainer to even a man on the street to realize that the country’s economy is near collapse (just look at the desperately impoverished condition of the people and country at large, galloping prices and inflation etc), prevalence of a state of utter lawlessness ( daily massacres of civilians and destruction of people’s property by Jihadist’s suicide bombings and attacks with complete impunity ) and the presence of a lethal and palpable danger to country’s existence and continuance in its current political and geographical shape ( large swaths of Pakistan’s own territory in Jihadists/ Taliban control). I’m sure the military , no matter how ‘futile’ it is as Kamran Saheb correctly points out, do indeed realizes these doomsday threats to the country , which are directly caused by the Jihadists/ Talibans.

Secondly, its assumed that the military will be able to” eliminate all Jihadi groups one by one” once it realizes that the doomsday conditions do exist in the country. Well as stated above such conditions do actually exist and the question arises that why isn’t the military trying to eliminate all Jihadi groups ? Perhaps, the short answer is that may be it can’t. May be the military is not up to the task of fighting and eliminating all the Jidadi groups. In my opinion our military is not geared up for it : it doesn’t have the ability and will , for whatever reasons, to decisively take on the Jihadi groups which are embedded not only in FATA and NWFP but also in every urban areas of the country.

So what is the final outcome, the endgame for our country? Most likely, the country will muddle through its existence like a sputtering vehicle with the assistance of a military and economic push by the U.S. now and then. Of course, there will be occasional fits of chest-thumping by the military in a show of hollow arrogance . However, the risk of the country coming to an abrupt standstill and violent implosion would always persist. It would be futile and in vain to wait for the military to mitigate or eliminate this mortal risk. In my view, only a people’s movement enmasse, along the lines of civilians’ struggle for restoration of the judiciary but only about twenty times larger and armed, would be able to thwart the Jihadist onslaught against Pakistanis and Pakistan.

Shireen Mazari – Meet the Ann Coulter of Pakistan

Slander – Meet the Ann Coulter of Pakistan.

by: Nicholas Schmidle

In late August, a couple of weeks after a U.S. drone strike incinerated Baitullah Mehsud, leader of the Pakistani Taliban, the country’s most popular televised chat show, “Capital Talk,” hosted a panel to discuss national security. Among the guests was a squat, middle-aged woman with short black hair, streaked with silver dye, named Shireen Mazari. A defense analyst and public intellectual, Mazari is known for her hawkish nationalism–and deep suspicions of India and the United States. Her presence in the studio suggested that, despite the enormous threat her country faced from homegrown terrorists, the conversation that night wouldn’t center around Mehsud or the Pakistani Taliban.

Striking Suicide Bombers!

Found, I am not sure where, by Gweilicus

Courtesy: fmft.net

.. suicide bombers in Britain are set to begin a three-day strike on Monday in a dispute over the number of virgins they are entitled to in the afterlife. Emergency talks with Al Qaeda management have so far failed to produce an agreement. The unrest began last Tuesday when Al Qaeda announced that the number of virgins a suicide bomber would receive after his death will be cut by 25% next January from 72 to only 60. The rationale for the cut was the increase in recent years of the number of suicide bombings and a subsequent shortage of virgins in the afterlife.

The suicide bombers’ union, the British Organisation of Occupational Martyrs (or B.O.O.M.) responded with a statement that this was unacceptable to its members and immediately balloted for strike action. General Secretary Abdullah Amir told the press, “Our members are literally working themselves to death in the cause of Jihad. We don’t ask for much in return but to be treated like this by management is a kick in the teeth.”

Mr Amir accepted the limited availability of virgins but pointed out that the cutbacks were expected to be borne entirely by the workforce and not by management. “Last Christmas Abu Hamza alone was awarded an annual bonus of 250,000 virgins,” complains Amir. “And you can be sure they’ll all be pretty ones too. How can Al Qaeda afford that for members of the management but not 72 for the people who do the real work?”

The healing Tea

Green/Black tea with out sugar and milk has shown some real benefits such as reducing heart disease and the risk of pancreatic, prostate, stomach and lung cancer. It because of its range of balanced vitamins and antioxidant properties. Green tea has concentration of flavonoids and polyphenols which have healing properties. A recent study has also found that the green tea antioxidants may prevent or reduce the severity of rheumatoid arthritis because they inhibit Cox-2 gene that triggers inflammation. The green tea’s antioxidents help the liver to work more efficiently because green tea help to control blood sugar levels and it also lower the body fat. Green tea may also help to lower the blood pressure. Laboratory studies show that the polyphenols in green if taken with out sugar can help prevent or reduce the risk of some cancers.

Is the glass half-full or half-empty?

by: Omar Ali

Is this a sign of increasing desperation in the premier spy agency+ Jihad crowd because they are losing control of the country?

I ask because obviously in the good old days, they did not have to ask the people to rise up and sweep away “crooked democracy” because they had already done the sweeping away. Today, President Zardari and ..his team and the Sharifs and MQM and ANP are all living IN Pakistan. They do not have control over the security establishment, but they are not totally powerless either. Is the glass half-full or half-empty?

North American Sindhis demand

Please convey the views and demands of SANA members and SANALIST subscribers to Sindhi leaders as SANA delegate meets them over coming days. I am attaching below a copy of the SANA resolutions that were passed at the the 25th SANA convention and express the key demands and sentiments of the convention attendees. In addition, the recent concerns expressed on SANALIST include the following:

1. It is imperative that the government fairly and equitably allocate funds and implement improvements in all cities, towns, and villages of Sindh. Many overseas visitors to Sindh have noticed tangible improvements in the non-Sindhi areas of Karachi and Hyderabad. But, the situation in the Sindhi areas and the other localities continue to remain hopeless. The basic services such as garbage collection, sanitary and sewage, roads, and drinking water supply have worsen each year. The Sindh government must select five (5) cities, ten (10) towns, and twenty (20) villages in Sindh as models and immediately implement a program of improved municipal services. This program should include training of local volunteers and incentives that encourage residents to create a self-supporting system for maintaining of the basic civic services. Once these models become showcase and a “best practice”, the program should be extended to other cities, towns, and villages of Sindh.

2. Demand from the Sindh Government officials to do their best to secure the release of Aakash Mallah, Vice Chairman of the Sindh nationalist party Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), and JSQM activist Noor Mohammad Khaskheli. These political workers were abducted on 30th October and are believed to be the victims of enforced disappearances by government security officials.

3. The “Friends of Indus Forum”, a group associated with World Wide Fund (WWF) have recently expressed grave concerns over the worsening situation of the wetlands and Indus eco-region sites of Sindh and said the acute shortage of water in Indus River has badly affected the general ecology of the province. The SANA delegate should demand from the government to create a nation-wide awareness campaign about this calamity and secure agreement from all provinces to allocate some amount of water to save the dying wetlands of Sindh.

4. Effective yesterday (January 1, 2010), the local government system has become a provincial subject in three provinces of Pakistan except in Sindh. Click the following link of a recent article published in DAWN for more details: http://www.dawn.com/wps/wcm/connect/dawn-content-library/dawn/the-newspaper/front-page/12-system-continues-in-sindh-nazims-reign-ends-in-three-provinces–bi-09

All district Nazims in Punjab, Balochistan, and NWFP are supposed to stop functioning and the provincial governments are said to have appointed local administrators until fresh elections can be held. The Article 140-A of Pakistan Constitution says: “Each province shall, by law, establish a local government system and devolve political, administrative and financial responsibility and authority to the ‘elected representatives’ of the local governments.” Thus, denying this important provision of provincial autonomy is injustice to Sindh.

The newspaper reports say that MQM is prepared to accept this change provided that no new administrators are appointed and local government elections are held within three (3) months. Ironically, this ill-advised move of the present government indirectly supports the plan to separate Karachi and Hyderabad from rest of Sindh as it strengthens the claim that Karachi and Hyderabad city governments are operating without being the subject of Sindh provincial government. This is a serious setback to the geographic integrity of Sindh.

On behalf of the SANA members, the visiting SANA leaders must demand from the federal government to extend this provision to Sindh and hold local government elections in Sindh under the new provisions within three months.

I hope that SANA leaders will take courageous stands for promotion and protection of Sindhi rights and effectively represent the views and demands of SANA community.

Wishing you success in your meetings!

“War on terror” gravy train!

by Omar Ali

My take on the Pak army’s current position oscillates between Taqi’s opinion and the opinion of Dr. Manzur Ejaz. I was fully behind Dr. Manzur Ejaz this morning. But its getting late at night and I just saw Kamran Khan and so maybe its time to put on a more pessimistic hat…

Rationally, Dr. Saheb is one hundred percent right. The army has a huge stake in Pakistan’s economy. Pakistan’s economy has no future if we are in a state of near-war and proxy war with India, Pakistan’s economy has even less of a future if NATO regards Pakistan as an enemy instead of an ally. India’s economy is growing rapidly. Peace will allow Pakistan to attach on India’s growth. Given its lower population density, reasonable infrastructure in Punjab and Karachi, relatively homogeneous heartland, and favorable location (Iran-India pipeline, central Asian transit trade, easier to ship things from Karachi to East Punjab than it is to go via Gujarat, etc.) Pakistan can actually start making serious money relatively quickly and that means the army will make money. China is also focused on economic growth and trade between India and China is exploding. Pakistan can get a share in all that. The peace dividend, in other words, is real and almost immediate.

Meanwhile, the jihadis are certifiably insane and are already a huge threat to the Pakistani state. America, NATO, Japan, Korea, all will pay good money to go after them and the job will take so many years, the army has no reason to worry that its “war on terror” gravy train will dry up anytime soon. Socially, Pakistan is not really ready for Jihadists rule. The jihadis have absolutely no workable program for a modern state….the case for ditching the jihadis and making peace with India seems open and shut. (Of course, INDIA may not cooperate either, but we are focusing right now on what the Pak army is thinking).

So are there some reasons to doubt this rational analysis?

1. The army may calculate (miscalculate in my opinion, but who said they cannot miscalculate?) that peace with India will deprive them of their ability to keep everyone else in Pakistan under their thumb. Or (even more stupidly) that it will deprive Pakistan of its reason for existence.

2. Some geniuses in NDU spend their life looking at rivers on the map and writing position papers about how Pakistan will shrivel and die if we don’t “have Kashmir”. Outsiders tend to think this his just the usual institute of strategic studies bullshit, but I have yet to meet an army officer who did not wholly or partly believe this. All sorts of other gory details about evil devious Hindu Brahmans and their determination to eat every last Muslim baby are added as needed. Again, outsiders tend to think this is “just propaganda” and expect that the army can distinguish between genuine maniacs like Babu Bajrangi and mainstream Indian politicians, but maybe the outsiders are giving the army too much credit? As you may know, even senior army officers seem to believe this propaganda by the time they have had a few drinks. This is an old hazard in the world of propaganda: the propagandists tend to fall for their own propaganda, especially when they live in some echo chamber where alternative views don’t get in anyway.

3. Some in the army and its “think tanks” (Shireen Mazari?) may think that it is more rational to destroy India before it becomes a serious power, and they may imagine that their BFFs in China actually want the same. It does’nt matter if Wen Jia bao doesnt actually think in these terms. What matters is that Shireen Mazari and General Tinpot bahadur imagine that the Chinese want this to happen. Dr. Manzur Ejaz is a sane person, but far too many Pakistani army officers are listening to Zaid Hamid and Ahmed Qureshi, not Dr Manzur Ejaz. What if they take those nutcases seriously?

4. The problem of true believers. Again, outsiders tend to think that Islam and the whole neo-wahabi paradigm are basically means to an end. Tools used by the Pak army to get its goodies, just like Republican candidates use evangelical Christianity. But what if a lot of people in high places actually believe that Allah is waiting for them to unite the Ummah and lead it in its eternal struggle against the infidels?

5. There is the issue of some events that don’t make a lot of sense if the jihadi option is actually being shut down: the determined refusal to launch frontal propaganda against the jihadis; the fact that ISI mouthpieces are constantly working to stir up anti-American and anti-Indian feelings and spreading confusion about the jihadi menace; The attack on Mumbai and the determined effort to present it as some kind of Indian plot; The mysterious survival of all senior jihadi leaders; Masood Azhar; Daood Ibrahim; Ahmed Saeed Shiekh; Haqqani network; Fazlullah, etc. And the line taken by army spokesmen like Kamran Khan; Shireen Mazari….too many loose ends…

5. Finally, there is the issue of nutcases. Every nation has some maniacs who need to be kept in asylums or employed in low level police jobs or as prison guards in Texas. If this kind of person makes it to some place where they can plan another attack on Mumbai, then all bets are off.

Dr. T has mentioned the Nazis. The sophisticated, highly civilized German nation ruined Germany and all of Europe in 12 short years of Nazi rule. At some level, Hitler’s initial actions seemed rational. Rationalists fully expected that he would also know where to draw the line. They were proven terribly wrong. What if the true believers are not thinking of means but ends?

I look forward to being proved wrong.

IAOJ editorial : Counter the undemocratic forces through joint struggle

The equation of the establishment of Pakistan is changing and a new equation of establishment (Security establishment + Power hungry judicial activists + segment of media & politicians) is emerging to power struggle with democratic forces of the country.

The history of democracy in different countries say that in initial stages, democracy doesn’t bring much but it give opportunities to different stake holders to discuss, involve, evolve and share ideas openly to move forward. If democracy empower continuing than it has a mechanism to bring astonishing benefits to the country and its people. Democracy has mechanism and dynamics to filter those who are not performing well or it helps them to re-aproach through democratic ways to new thinking and to carry some thing better and positive to the voters. This is the time for the parliament and democratic forces of Pakistan to do joint struggle against the undemocratic move, conspiracy or unconstitutional road map which may derail the democracy. Remember ones Winston Churchill was said that “Democracy is the worst system but it is the best system we have.”

Years Will Come And Go, My Sindh Will Go On Forever And Forever

Poetry by Ahmed Makhdoom

Years will come and, years will go,

Decades will come and, decades will go,

Millenniums will come and, millenniums will go,

Mortals will come and, mortals will go,

My Sindhrree will go on forever and forever!

My motherland will glitter forever and forever!

Today, an old year has left us and a new year is born,

And, I pray to Great Lord, Beloved, Master of my soul;

But, wait! Me, a tiny drop; Thee, Vast Ocean Supreme!

Tiny I am, qualified I am not; Sinner I am, impure I feel;

My murshid is most qualified – my teacher, my guide;

Lord! Me, a wretched being, Bhittai is Thy friend indeed!

Police arrested mastermind 10 days before Karachi blast?

LAHORE: An alleged mastermind of the Youm-e-Ashur blast in Karachi was arrested 10 days before the incident, which implies that police had prior knowledge of the suicide bombing, as the accused had revealed all details of the plans and the explosives to investigators, a private TV channel reported on Thursday.
